New Year's Lawn Care Resolutions
January 2014

Happy New Year!  We are excited to send you the first Timely Tips newsletter for 2014.  It is going to be a great year.  Here you will find all of the lawn care tips you need throughout the seasons to help you grow the best lawn in town.  In January we like to think about what could be done to your lawn differently.  Perhaps you were not 100% happy with the way your lawn turned out this past year and are looking to make a few changes.  Here are some lawn care resolutions you can adopt for the new year.
It all starts with the soil
Typical results. May take 1-3 applications.

New Year's resolutions are all about getting back to the basics and changing the foundation of the way we do something.  For the lawn that means focusing on the soil.  The soil is the foundation of the lawn and as you have heard us say before if you have poor soil you will have a poor looking lawn.  The two most common problems homeowners face with their soil is unbalanced pH and compaction.

These issues can be easily fixed with an early spring application of Mag-I-Cal Calcium Fertilizer and Love Your Lawn-Love Your Soil (LYL-LYS).  Mag-I-Cal will help to raise soil pH and Love Your Lawn-Love Your Soil will reduce soil compaction.  Most lawns suffer from compaction and aerating your lawn is only a temporary fix.  Using LYL-LYS will make the soil more porous and alive by stimulating the beneficial microbes that are already present.  Not sure if your soil pH is unbalanced?  Plan on taking a soil test this spring to determine what your lawn is lacking. Jonathan Green has a soil pH test kit available that is quick and easy to use.  Applying this organic duo is definitely a lawn care resolution you can stick to and see great results!

What kind of grass seed have you been using?

For a resolution to be successful you have to be honest with yourself.  So let's be honest about the type of grass seed you have been using.  We are sure that it has been tempting to use a lesser quality seed at times.  The reality is you will reap what you sow and your lawn will never be better than the grass seed you use.  Do you choose a car just because it is the cheapest in the lot?  If you do it probably will not last very long.  Planting a quality grass seed like our Black Beauty grass seed mixtures will give you the dark-green lawn you have been dreaming of. Black Beauty grass seed contains endophytes which naturally deter surface feeding insects.  These endophytes will not diminish over time.   For the best results choose the mixture that is suited for the area and properly prepare the soil for seeding.  Having good seed to soil contact is necessary for good germination.  Want to know more about choosing the right grass seed?
