Manners Matter

Rules of Etiquette Need to be Followed - Even at a Health Club...

Sure, the social graces expected in the weight and cardio rooms are a bit different from those expected at the symphony, but manners are important just the same.

The Biggest Loser - Winter Blast Challenge Has Begun...

The Biggest Loser - Winter Blast Challenge is off and running. Our Winter Blast Challenge has the largest (no pun intended) Biggest Loser member participation to-date. Fifty-eight challengers will work with their personal training groups twice a week for six weeks, weigh in weekly, and receive nutritional guidance from our registered dietitian, Karla Hamel. The stakes are high, with cash prizes to be awarded to the top 3 Biggest Loser individuals. Good luck to all, and happy reading your food labels!

16 Supposedly Healthy Foods That Have More Sugar Than a Snickers Bar -

Calories count... too often sugar masquerades as an apparently more "healthy" ingredient in the form of honey, rice syrup, or even "organic dehydrated cane juice." It's still sugar.

The real problem with sugar is that it makes us crave more sugar. When sugar enters our body, it causes the chemical serotonin to be released, which triggers our brain's reward center and makes us feel more relaxed. That would be fine, except that regularly eating too much sugar dulls this feel-good response so that it takes larger amounts of sugar to get there - meaning the more sugar we eat, the more we crave.

Every nutritionist interviewed for this post recommends that we consume less than half the amount of sugar most Americans actually consume. The World Health Organization allows for more in their recommendation but may soon cut that number in half. In any event, you should probably consume no more than 6 teaspoons/25 grams of added sugar a day, which would account for 5% of your daily caloric intake, instead of the 13% most people are currently getting from sugar.

This list is going to break your heart.

Congratulations - Martha Baisch, Certified bootybarre instructor

Congratulations to Martha Baisch on becoming a certified bootybarre instructor. Martha's classes are offered Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:15am and 9:30am respectively.

Not sure what a Booty Barre workout is? Take a look here.

The pre-requisites for The Booty Barre certification are that you must have experience in one of the following disciplines: Pilates, yoga, group fitness, personal training or dance. After completion of the certification you are required to submit a 60-minute video of you teaching a class.

Submitted videos are marked on the instructor's musicality, clear vocal cues, encouragement, safety, executing the exercises correctly and correct repertoire. Each instructor receives a detailed report on their execution of The Booty Barre technique. Booty Barre requires each instructor to complete a total of 6 continuing education units within a two-year period.
