Greetings! | |
Spring is just around the corner and we're all more than ready to welcome the warmer weather. The changing of the seasons is accompanied by the celebrations of St. Patrick's Day, Passover and Easter, all happy occasions for getting together with family and friends this month.
Meanwhile, you and your friends at The Chatham Club can join forces with our personal trainers in a new fitness challenge: Cardio Cruisin' USA. Find out all about it, and much more that is happening at the Club in this issue of Happenings. You'll learn about the five new classes that we've added to our weekly schedule, a Restorative Yoga Workshop, and an opportunity to help a local child and her family.
The Mitchell Squash program is busy with preparations for adult and junior, individual and team competitions, at all ages and skill levels. Registrations are being accepted for spring after-school classes and for summer squash camp, including a trip to Budapest for training. Plus, there is a special offer for women who want to give the game a try.
Make March the month that you freshen up your workout with a new challenge, a new class or a new form of exercise. You'll find them all at The Chatham Club...
In good health,
Chris

Trainer Tip of the Month - Kneeling Overhead Press
|
Submitted by: Traci Stanard, B.S., M.S., CFT
We all are aware that both the mind and body need to be used to be maintained. But how difficult is it to constantly come up with innovative exercises that require new neuro-transmitters to fire? Performing the same routine will lead to boredom and eventually decline in your mental and physical potential. The following exercise is part of on-going research into the benefits of whole body fitness - incorporating the mind and body by using challenging balance and tension movements.
To properly execute the following exercise, one must pay close attention to body alignment and core tension, as well as bicep/tricep contraction and extension. To top it off the overhead press puts tension on the skeletal structure which is necessary to maintain bone health. Take a look at the following demonstration and then test yourself with a few sets of stable lunge/bicep curl/overhead press - taking advantage of not only toning your biceps/triceps but strengthening your core, hamstrings and quads as well.

Squash Training Corner:
How can you best help your child or friend when coaching them between games at a tournament? Giving advice between games can be a tricky endeavor. Often the scales can be tipped and your advice will make a big difference in a match. It can be a huge comfort and help to have a coach, friend or parent offer a few well chosen words during the 90 seconds between games if these main concepts are kept in mind.
1: Be positive - make your player feel confident!
So much of this game is mental - help your player get in the 'zone' and stay there.
2: One voice only - one fellow player, one coach or one parent.
Others offering tactical advice will only confuse the athlete.
3: In many cases, no advice is the best advice.
When a player is playing incredible squash, don't get in their way. A smile from a coach or parent,
a simple thumb's up or pat on the back is best.
