Interview with WSECU Employee Giving Campaign Coordinator, Gretchen White

United Way Staff: Why is United Way important to you?

Gretchen: We started the campaign with a tour of locally funded United Way programs. One of the progrWSECU_gretchenams was Rosie's Place run by Community Youth Services which is a drop in center for at-risk youth. I was so moved by this program and that these kids have a place to go. I have cleaned out my closet at least three times and given items to their closet for youth.

When I was asked to chair this year's campaign, I said yes because I like to help out but I really didn't know a lot about United Way. After researching one United Way of Thurston County's website and Facebook page, the message of the building blocks for success, Education, Income and Health really hit home. United Way meets such a broad range of needs in the community. Everyone can find something within United Way to get passionate about.  Read more about Gretchen here...

Why 2-1-1 Matters
As told to United Way staff by an anonymous donor
"When you shared one important piece of information with me, I had no idea how valuable those three numbers "2-1-1" would become. I have used this little number three times in the last two weeks alone while serving my clients.

I want to share a story that moved me to tears.

I was helping a woman who was granted custody of her disabled grand-daughter over a year ago. With all the challenges, emotionally and financially, this transition brought, she found her health also declining. In August of this year, she was ordered by her physician to stop work.

She found herself with a gap in pay from August until November 1st. (when Social Security and retirement would kick in). She came in to my office two weeks ago at rock bottom.  I could clearly see that her needs went well beyond my expertise.
