Primarily targeting school children in grades 4 through 8, the 13 installments can be published in-print or online, as a series or as a special section. Use all or just a few.
The people we profiled offer our students a look at native sons and daughters who contributed to our state, nation and world. Each 500 word profile is accompanied with a photograph/artwork of the person and a New York State locator map. Here is a list of NIE and other resources for kids, teachers or parents can use to enhance their students' education.
October is National Fire Prevention Month. The National Fire Protection Association' s theme this year is, "Don't Wait - Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years" The Association has free classroom materials and resources you can download from the website at http://www.nfpa.org/public-education/campaigns/fire-prevention-week/teaching-fpw
October is also National Bullying Prevention Month. The NYNPA NIE Program in partnership with Operation Respect and the Cyberbullying Research Center created a six-part series with a teaching guide and audio podcasts. The content was created to give students and readers a general understanding of what bullying and, more specifically, cyberbullying is and how it can affect those involved. It will also explores strategies for preventing it. Contact Mary Miller at mmiller@nynpa.com for camera ready copy of these features.
The Teaching Tolerance Program of the Southern Poverty Law Center offers Civil Discourse in the Classroom. Using these lessons, students will be able to turn their unsubstantiated opinions into reasoned arguments. They also will learn how to effectively challenge an opposing argument-not with fists and fury, but rather with a step-by-step process for refutation.
These tools lay the groundwork for productive, reasoned and lively discussions on a variety of topics. They also will give students "training wheels" for learning how to have reasoned arguments outside the classroom. Although it is primarily designed for young adolescents, the curriculum can be adapted for students of any age.

The National Student/Parent Mock Election gives American students all across the country the opportunity to cast their votes for candidates in both the federal and state elections. They may also vote on the issues they care about.
This program builds on the 36-year history of the National Student/Parent Mock Election. In 2016, national student voting begins on October 24 and culminates on November 3, National Mock Election day, 5 days in advance of the nation's election.
"The National Student/Parent Mock Election is proud to announce a new partnership for 2016," said Gloria Kirshner, president. Win My Vote will be providing online ballots featuring multimedia candidate and ballot issue profiles for this project. Students, parents, teachers and home schoolers will be able to hear directly from each candidate (video) as well as the leading arguments "for" and "against" the ballot issues before casting their vote. The ballots are browser based (no downloaded needed) and can be easily accessible via any internet-enabled device (computers, tablets, smartphones, etc.). The ballots will also provide for real-time voting stats on how the candidates and ballot issues are doing." Have your educators and students ENROLL today. Curriculum guides for 2016 are now available!.

From edutopia.org - Social and emotional learning expert and longtime Edutopia blogger Maurice Elias pointed us to a fantastic resource to share with parents. Produced by NBC's Education Nation project, the Parent Toolkit website has comprehensive resources and minute-long videos for parents of kids at every age and grade. The content covers a variety of topics, including health and wellness, academics, and the social and emotional development series that Maurice contributed to. I've gathered my favorites from their collection below. All the videos and resources are available in both English and Spanish, and they're great to pass on to parents -- or watch if you're a parent yourself!
