The New York Press Association (NYPA), New York News Publishers Association (NYNPA), New York Newspapers Advertising and Marketing Executives (NYNAME), and the Free Community Papers of New York (FCPNY) are pleased to announce a new partnership that will see the four organizations co-present the 2017 Spring Convention and Trade Show in April. The New York State Circulation Management Association, Inc. (NYSCMA, Inc.), which had collaborated with NYNAME and NYNPA on an annual conference since 2008, will instead partner with the Inter-State Circulation Management Association (I-SCMA) to co-present their conference in Pittsburgh, PA in September, 2017.
Scheduled for April 6-8, 2017 at the Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Springs, the Spring Convention aims to bring together the weekly, community and daily newspapers of New York State for a weekend of industry-leading speakers, manager and staff training, and valuable networking that is sure to improve staff productivity and benefit a paper's bottom line, no matter its size.
With the addition of NYNPA and NYNAME as co-presenters, members of those organizations will now be permitted to attend the convention at standard NYPA member rates. Additionally, NYNPA and NYNAME members will be eligible to participate in the advertising and special section categories of NYPA's Better Newspaper Contest, effectively replacing NYNAME's annual advertising contest. NYNPA will continue to administer its own journalism and photography awards competition for its members each year, as usual.
Although NYNAME and NYSCMA, Inc. will no longer be collaborating on an annual conference, the two groups will continue working closely on other projects, including regular networking meet-ups and other training sessions across the state. The next meet-up will take place Thursday, September 15th in Syracuse (details will be announced shortly).

NNA's Chip Hutcheson: We count on the mail
From the National Newspaper Association -
(Editor's note: Newspapers are encouraged to reprint this editorial.) By Chip Hutcheson President/National Newspaper Association and Publisher/The Times Leader, Princeton, KY I got the mail today. A couple of bills. A greeting card. Some catalogs. A newspaper. One package that my wife grabbed right away. (Wonder what that was?) Lately, it occurs to me how completely I take for granted that I will get the mail tomorrow. I've had my share of gripes about the mail. As president of the National Newspaper Association, I have fielded our community newspaper members' postal concerns all year. The mail is slower than it used to be. The U.S. Postal Service slowed it down by a day, at least, because of financial problems. Newspaper subscribers are unhappy because too often their papers are arriving late. Some local businesses have had problems with cash flow because of late mail. Still, I get the mail every day but Sunday. Bet you do, too. If you follow the news, you know the U.S. Postal Service is in trouble. Because so many people and businesses use the internet, there isn't as much mail to deliver. But we still expect the mail to come. At my newspaper, we look for it on Saturdays, too, because weekend mail is extremely important in small towns. (Congress considered ending Saturday mail, but thankfully it has dropped that idea for now.) More

Buffalo News wins bidding for Community Papers trade names
From The Buffalo News - The Buffalo News now owns nearly 40 publication names formerly controlled by Community Papers of Western New York, following a Thursday auction.
Community Papers shut its doors in late July, marking the end of several Sun papers, Pennysavers and other publications that had served Western New York communities. The company had filed for bankruptcy.
