Forcey: Here's to two centuries of serving the community

Original issue of the Auburn Gazette published June 12_ 1816
From Auburnpub.com, by publisher, Rob Forcey - 200 years. Wow.

I remember celebrating the 200th anniversary of our country and thinking how cool it was to be a part of the big parades, fairs and overall celebration in the country at the time.
Here I am, at the head of a 200-year-old organization, and I think I really understand what it means, which makes it even more amazing. We started publishing in 1816. Only 40 years after the birth of our country!

If that isn't amazing enough, we have been there through the growth of our country: through shuttle crashes and world wars, through natural disasters and hometown heroes, and through all of the joys and pains that Auburn has celebrated. It boggles the mind that we were there. Through almost everything. More

Gannett image
From NJ.org
-
Gannett is reportedly close to purchasing The Record, New Jersey's second-largest newspaper.

According to the New York Post, the largest newspaper chain in America has been in talks for months to buy North Jersey Media Group, the publisher that owns The Record and close to 50 communities papers across North Jersey. The Post, citing an unnamed source, reports the deal could be made public by Friday.

Gannett already owns the Asbury Park Press and five other newspapers in the state.
North Jersey Media Group runs the website NorthJersey.com, where articles are published from the Record, the Herald-News and 49 other weekly newspapers throughout Northern New Jersey. More
Zinsergram: Getting Ready for the New FLSA Overtime Rule: Newspaper Q&As

As readers will know from my previous column, the U.S. Department of Labor recently finalized its Proposed Rule to increase the salary threshold necessary for employees to be classified as exempt from overtime. The Final Rule, which goes into effect on December 1, 2016, has prompted many questions from newspapers. Here are a few I have recently received regarding potential exemptions from the new Rule:

Question - Our District Managers regularly deliver down routes, including home delivery. Could our newspaper use the Section 13(d) exemption from minimum wage and overtime requirements to avoid the higher salary requirements of the U.S. Department of Labor's new Rule?

Answer - Two reported newspaper cases - one from 2008 and one from 2012 - make a compelling argument that the delivery of down routes by Circulation Department District Managers may be enough to make the Section 13(d) exemption applicable.

The net result is that the increased salary requirements of the new DOL Rule would not apply. Assuming analogous facts, these cases could be relied upon. They have not been overruled or reversed. There has not been a lot of litigation under Section 13(d).

In both cases, the job description of the District Manager-type position included responsibility for delivering non-contracted routes in the absence of a contracted independent contractor. The two courts focused on the precise language of the Section 13(d) exemption:  More

Editor's Note: If your newspaper has additional questions about the new Rule on overtime, please plan to attend Michael Zinser's upcoming webinar through the Online Media Campus. The webinar will be held at 1:00 p.m. Central time on Thursday, July 14, 2016. To register, visit http://www.onlinemediacampus.com/2016/06/new-labor-rule/

Election 2016
From NAA.org, by David Chavern, President and CEO - Donald Trump is blacklisting journalists.

Last week I wrote about this dangerous behavior, cataloging Trump's threats and insults. Yesterday, The Donald decided to bar The Washington Post from his campaign events after taking offense to a headline.

The White House Correspondents' Association released a letter today supporting the media outlets that have been blacklisted. So far, Trump has banned POLITICO, The Daily Beast, Univision, The Des Moines Register, Buzzfeed and The Huffington Post. The NAA supports these publications.  More

NYT coverage of Orlando Tragedy
From NYTimes.com
- When news breaks, editors must decide quickly how much coverage to give it. Is the story important? What are the broader implications? Will the situation get worse?

In a digital age, new information comes quickly. Our job is to respond to it just as fast. Stories are updated, photos are added, details are swapped in, then homepage editors give it increasing prominence on the website and apps to cue in readers to its importance.

The GIF right shows how The Times's treatment of the Orlando shooting evolved as we learned more and discovered the scope of the horror. More
