CIVICS EDUCATION CORNER

CRF
This lesson explores Texas v. Johnson, the controversial 1989 Supreme Court decision on flag burning.

First, students read about and discuss Texas v. Johnson. Then in small groups, students role play aides to a U.S. senator on the Judiciary Committee. The committee is considering a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution banning flag burning, and the aides must make a recommendation on whether the senator should support or oppose the proposed amendment.

Scholarly research shapes how we view the past and, by extension, the world around us. Inspired by this valuable learning opportunity, Researching Roots will guide students through a comparative research project in which they analyze accounts of slavery - as presented in the Roots miniseries and other historical sources - to find similarities and differences between the sources while discovering their own unifying ideas on the topic.

The Students Become the Teachers: There isn't much students love more than the realization that they are now the experts on their grade - so much more experienced and knowledgeable than the kids who will be in your class next year. Give them the chance to show off with these next two activities that ask them to reflect on what they have learned and share some useful advice with your incoming class.

It can be a blast to ask your students to provide your incoming class with advice for how to survive your class and grade. Come up with a list of fun questions, like:
  • My favorite lesson this year was...,
  • If you don't want to make the teacher mad, don't...,
  • One thing I wish I knew in September was... and more.
Your class will love giving the "inside scoop" to their younger schoolmates (and you'll love reading their responses!). Compile all their responses and you'll have a newspaper to share with your incoming class of everything they'll need to know.

What's better than a hands-on memento keepsake that your students made themselves? Try having students create their own classroom special edition newspaper with a story for each major event during the school year!
