Brian Doane
Messenger Post Media has named a new publisher, Brian Doane, who comes from Kalispell, Montana, where he has spent the past several years working as the advertising director for the Daily Interlake before starting Hagadone Digital Montana from the ground up as its sales director.

Doane's background is largely in print newspapers and digital, and he said readers can expect "an enhanced commitment to local content and a commitment to excellence with every publication."

"I couldn't be more excited to be here and become a part of this great community," Doane said.

Doane is married with three children, all out of school. He is an avid sports fan and outdoors enthusiast who loves to watch movies, spark up the grill and spend time with his family. More
New home, new era for D&C
From Democratandchronicle.com
D_C Staff at new location
Once an anchor of downtown's west side, the Democrat and Chronicle on Monday became the new kid on an East Main Street block in the midst of significant reinvestment.

"This day is a day of celebration," said Karen Magnuson, executive editor and vice president/news.

The new D&C Digital offices at 245 E. Main St. sit opposite the Sibley building, across the Midtown lot from 88 Elm, and in the shadow of Tower 280 and The Metropolitan (the former Chase Tower). Those and other residential projects in the immediate area are expected to add more than 650 units in the coming years, while new office tenants will more than double the 190 D&C employees who spent the day unpacking and settling into their new space.

Staffers gathered in a light rain to cheer the official unveiling of the building's sign shortly before noon Monday. Back inside, D&C President Michael Kane led opening day festivities that included Mayor Lovely Warren, County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo and Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Robert Duffy.

"This is a building built for tomorrow," Kane said before the event. "That's part of the excitement." More
Watertown Daily Times responds to NYSCOPBA's boycott: 'We stand behind the story'
From auburnpub.com
The managing editor of the Watertown Daily Times says his newspaper stands behind the story they wrote on alleged inmate abuse at Ogdensburg Correctional Facility - an article which led New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association President Michael Powers to call for a boycott of the publication Friday.

In an email, Watertown Daily Times Managing Editor Perry White wrote that the story "parallels findings of other journalists who have managed to get inside the state's tightly closed prison walls."

He added that NYSCOPBA was asked to comment on the story, and the union did participate. Powers told the newspaper that the allegations were unfounded - the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision's Office of Special Investigations looked into the claims - and a union spokesman said they stand behind the officers.

The story was published on Thursday. On Friday, Powers released a statement slamming the Watertown Daily Times and calling on NYSCOPBA members to boycott the newspaper and its sister publications.

"We did, after all, make numerous efforts to get statements from NYSCOPBA, its members and officials of the prison," White wrote. "NYSCOPBA's response was one sentence, as was the state's. No prison official was allowed (or will be allowed) to speak to the press. Under this cloak of secrecy, I'm uncertain how either NYSCOPBA or the state can claim the Times story was one-sided." More

This year, stories and photos produced by The Citizen in 2015 and auburnpub.com staff earned five awards.

Every year when I prepare entries for the contests we enter, I'm usually filled with satisfaction as I recall some of the great work our team did. This year, though, I had an even stronger sense of pride, and if you recall some of the award-winning work I'm about to highlight, I think you'll see why. In short, the people that work did some impressive journalism in 2015.
  • In the news feature/series category for daily print publications, Greg Mason and David Wilcox took second place for their special report on the state of the Fingerlakes Mall, a package that generated substantial community conversation and unearthed a ton of interesting facts and context.
  • In the human interest feature/series category, David Wilcox was honored again, this time with a second-place award for his profile on comedian Barry Crimmins, a Skaneateles native who was the subject of a highly acclaimed documentary.
  • In the all-print division (daily and non-daily) for column writing, our former sports writer Kristin Wolford took second place for her commentary titled "No winners in Union Springs," which provided perspective on a situation in which the high school basketball team disbanded.
  • In the photojournalism category, staff photographer Sarah Jean Condon earned second place for the shot she captured of a dramatic water rescue in the Owasco River near Hunter's Diner.
  • Finally, in the blogging category, Robert Harding took first place for his Eye on NY blog, the latest of many honors Robert has received for his stellar coverage of politics in New York state.
