NYNPA now accepting entries for 2015 Awards for Excellence contest
The New York News Publishers Association is now accepting entries for its 2015 Awards for Excellence competition, which recognizes journalistic excellence among the association's member newspapers.
 
Once again, entries for the annual contest will be collected online. The deadline to submit entries is Friday, March 18, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.
 
The 2015 competition features several changes, including five new categories and the adjustment of the contest's circulation classes.
 
New categories for the 2015 competition include Distinguished Live Sports Coverage, Distinguished Sports Column Writing, Distinguished News Supplement, Distinguished Sports Supplement, and Distinguished Feature Supplement.
 
To make way for the new categories, several old categories have been retired, including Distinguished Sports Coverage, Distinguished Newspaper Supplement, Distinguished Specialty Publication, and Distinguished Specialty Publication Feature Writing.
 
Additionally, the description for Distinguished Sports Writing, an existing category, has been re-worded to allow recognition of quality sports coverage, as well as top-notch sports writing.
 
The circulation classes, meanwhile, have been adjusted to balance the number of newspapers competing in each class. As a result of the change, the second-highest circulation class now includes newspapers with a circulation of 50,000-75,000, and the highest circulation class includes those with a circulation of over 75,000. The contest's other classes remain the same as previous years.
 
Changes to the 2015 competition are the result of member feedback received by the Association, including suggestions made by a committee of editors from various papers across New York State.

The Wall Street Journal plans three more vertical apps

The Wall Street Journal's taking a vertical approach to mobile apps.
While the Journal has a main app for its content, the publisher is also making specific apps. For example, WSJ Live offers video content, What's News is a daily digest of 10 stories a day, and City, the London-focused finance and markets app, is aimed at its 1.5 million U.K. readers. Now, according to the publisher's chief innovation officer Edward Roussel, there will be three more apps to come in the next few months.

Most publishers are seeing around half their Web traffic come from mobile. Dow Jones' Wall Street Journal is now at 55 percent, up from less than 50 in November, thanks to its sharpest growth spurt at the end of 2015, according to Roussel. GateHouse Media, LLC and Poynter Institute to Launch Professional Development Initiative

GateHouse Media, LLC, publisher of more newspapers than any company in the nation, has announced it will join with The Poynter Institute, a global leader in journalism, in a 2016 training certificate program for company journalists.

GateHouse and Poynter worked together to create detailed professional development programs, targeting specific journalism skills. The 2016 certificate programs will focus on digital newsgathering, social media and newsroom leadership skills. The courses will include online instruction from Poynter digital innovation faculty member Katie Hawkins-Gaar and industry experts such as three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter David Barstow.
Poynter and Duke to hold conference on automated fact-checking

Poynter's International Fact-Checking Network and the Duke Reporters' Lab will host "Tech & Check," the first conference to explore the promise and challenges of automated fact-checking.
Tech & Check, to be held March 31 to April 1 at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, will bring together experts from academia, journalism and the tech industry. The conference will include:
  • Demos and presentations of current research that automates fact-checking
  • Discussions about the institutional challenges of expanding automated work
  • Discussions on new areas for exploration, such as live fact-checking and automated annotation.
Research in computational fact-checking has been underway for several years but has picked up momentum with a flurry of new projects. More 
Area Satirical Publication The Onion Sold To Univision (Seriously)

Univision Communications Inc., the parent company to the nation's leading Spanish-language broadcast channel, has acquired a controlling stake in the satirical news site The Onion, NPR has learned.

The agreement between two seemingly disparate media outfits was described to NPR by a person with direct involvement in the negotiations. A second person who was briefed on the deal by Univision executives also confirmed its broad strokes. The amount of money involved in the deal was not disclosed. NPR has also obtained a memo from the CEO of The Onion announcing the deal to staffers.
This account is in many ways reliant upon the information provided by those two people. NPR sought comment Monday from corporate officials and spokespersons for Univision and The Onion about the deal, as well as from Fusion and ABC about elements of this story involving them. None of those messages by voice mail or email were returned.

Univision will acquire a 40 percent, controlling stake in The Onion, which includes the site, its influential sister popular-culture outfit The A.V. Club, the social media satire site Clickhole, and various book and video projects. Univision also will have the right to buy the humor company outright.

The move comes at a time of transition and change for both organizations.

Univision's dominance in Spanish language television has been based on a loyal but aging population. Latinos born in this country - a quickly growing segment of the population - are much more likely to consume media in English. Univision launched the English-language Fusion network in concert with Disney's ABC network to reach English-speaking Latinos, a venture that soon pivoted to reach millennials more generally. More
