"The Poughkeepsie Journal has a rich history of serving its community and has consistently been a leader in the market. I'm excited to rejoin the community and a great media organization." Fogler has served in several leadership roles with the Journal's parent, Gannett Co., Inc. He was president and publisher of the Ithaca Journal from May 2004 to October 2007 and the Burlington Free Press in Vermont from September 2010 to September 2014. Between those posts, he was vice president of marketing for the Democrat & Chronicle in Rochester. Most recently, Fogler, 50, has been chief marketing officer for Party City since July, and previously was that retailer's vice president of business development for nine months. He worked at the Poughkeepsie Journal from 1988 to 1995 and also has worked in marketing roles at The Reporter in Lansdale, Pa.; The Journal News in White Plains; and the Press & Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton before joining the Democrat & Chronicle. CGM publishes Top 25 Athletes List
|
With the Register-Star turning 230 years old, the sports staff at Columbia-Greene Media wanted to create a sports-related project that showcased the local talent that has come through the area and decided on doing a Top 25 Athletes to Ever Come Out of Columbia County list.
The sports department developed a list of roughly 100 candidates, narrowed it down to 25 and ranked them. The final group included an Olympian, NFL, MLB and NBA players, a women's baseball player who is in the Hall of Fame and many college athletes who still hold high school and collegiate records. Some are well known in the community while others have been forgotten about over time. The sports staff divided up the list and wrote stories ranging from 600-1,000 words on each athlete's career. Prior to its debut, a strip ad was run on the front page of the paper and it was teased to on Facebook and Twitter.
Starting with No. 25, we released one story per day until unveiling No. 1 with the project spanning from Nov. 27 to Jan. 2. From the start, community engagement was phenomenal with phone calls, emails, texts, Facebook messages and faxes coming in from people both local and as far away as Florida, either asking who was No. 1; advocating for a parent, sibling, child or former teammate; or just saying they enjoyed arguing with friends over who they had in their own Top 5.
Once rolling, the project didn't require any additional marketing or promotion. It took on a life of its own with word of mouth being a driving force behind its popularity. Daily Facebook posts of each story were picked up and shared widely.
Research was the most time consuming effort related to the project -- the sports staff dug through physical archives, microfilm and the internet. They also contacted colleges and professional teams for additional stats, information and photos.
All in all, we began this project at the beginning of November and wrapped on Jan. 2. The stories are still picking up hits on the website (nearing 30,000) and are still being shared on Facebook (reaching more than 75,000 people). It all culminated with the creation of a 2-sided poster that contains photos of the Top 25 on the front and info for each athlete on the back, which we plan on selling and sharing the profits with a local sports charity.

New York Times Names New Media Columnist
From nytimes.com
|
The New York Times said on Tuesday that Jim Rutenberg, chief political correspondent for the Sunday magazine, would become its media columnist, filling a role that has been vacant since the death of David Carr about a year ago.
"Our hunt for David's successor has been exhaustive, and we were privileged to have had extraordinary candidates from both inside and outside The Times," the newspaper's executive editor, Dean Baquet, and its business editor, Dean Murphy, said in a memo to the staff. "Jim brings to the job a passion for the story, a track record in covering the industry and the experienced eye of an astute observer."
Mr. Rutenberg, 46, joined The Times in 2000, from The New York Observer, to cover the media industry. He has since been an investigative reporter and a White House correspondent. Most recently, he worked on a series for the magazine about voting rights. His first article in the series prompted a letter to the editor from President Obama. His inaugural media column will be in the coming weeks, the memo said. He will continue to contribute to the magazine.
"It's an honor and beyond daunting to be granted the space that David filled in such a special way, which touched so many people," Mr. Rutenberg said. "There can never be another David Carr, so I can only hope to do his legacy, and the paper, proud."
Mr. Carr, who made his Media Equation column a must-read for those both inside and outside the industry, died last February. The Times has since named a fellowship for him. ___________________________________ Click here to read Margaret Sullivan's Wednesday OpEd, A Media Columnist Who Will Name Names

Our March issue will profile what we have long labeled "10 newspapers That Do It Right." Never meant to be a "10 Best" list, instead it spotlights select newspapers that have earned a notable achievement in at least one particular area, carried out a successful innovation, implemented cost savings procedures or developed programs that have generated revenues or increased circulation. This year we will also be including ideas, strategies and tactics which individuals have knocking around in their attics - whether or not they have been implemented or tested.
The objective of the story is to bring ideas together and share the best and the brightest in one comprehensive feature. All ideas are welcome.
