CIVICS EDUCATION CORNER

Veterans Day is an annual federal holiday celebrated on Nov. 11. Also known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, this date marks the anniversary of the end of World War I. Unlike Memorial Day, which commemorates the men and women who have died while serving in the military, Veterans Day honors all who have served in the U.S. armed forces. Share My Lesson has lesson plans, activities and classroom resources to help educators commemorate this holiday with students.

The Civics Renewal Network is a consortium of nonpartisan, nonprofit organizations committed to strengthening civic life in the U.S. by increasing the quality of civics education in our nation's schools and by improving accessibility to high-quality, no-cost learning materials.

Re-Thinking Thanksgiving: The Complete Story of an American Holiday
A FREE 3-part series of features and student worksheets for use in-print or online

Much of what people 'know' about Thanksgiving is actually a blend of fiction, myth and history that has become widely accepted as truth. But the events of what we call "the First Thanksgiving" are nothing like our traditions today. And the creation of the holiday has little to do with the feast that took place in 1621 between the English settlers at Plymouth that arrived on the Mayflower and the Wampanoag people.

This 3-part series was written by Perry Ground for the NYNPA NIE program all rights reserved 2011. Mr. Ground is a traditional storyteller, cultural educator, and the Project Coordinator at Native American Resource Center for the Rochester City School District.  Go to www.nynpa.com to download all content or click the Thanksgiving image above.

Author Mike Peterson and Illustrator, Christopher Baldwin are again teaming up to create a brand new non-fiction serial for NYNPA members to share with teachers and students around the state.   The 8-chapter story will cover the native populations and the intersection of the early European exploration and settlements in the new world through the events that formally formed our boundaries.  The working outline includes:
  1. Overview of the history and geography of what is now NYS
  2. The Iroquois (which will touch on the neighboring indigenous peoples)
  3.  Early Explorers - Verrazano, Hudson, Champlain, Smith and others.
  4. French
  5. Dutch
  6. English
  7. Settlements and conflict - This chapter will get more deeply into the conflicts among the English and French and the impact of both on the Iroquois.
  8. Borders, boundaries and settlements - touch on the upcoming F&I and Revolutionary Wars, where we're at now and how we got there.
