National Newspaper Week - October 4-10, 2015
From Press Release
Power of the Press Ad
This year marks the 75th anniversary of National Newspaper Week (NNW), October 4-10, 2015.  This observance underscores the impact of newspapers to communities large and small.

Your NNW content kit contains editorials, editorial cartoons, promotional ads and more that are available for download at no charge to newspapers across North America. NNW is sponsored and coordinated by Newspaper Association Managers, Inc., a consortium of North American trade associations representing the industry on a state and provincial, regional and national basis.

The theme of this year's NNW is "Power of the Press."

PLEASE PROMOTE National Newspaper Week by downloading these materials and devoting as many column inches as possible to reinforce the importance of newspapers to the communities and cities we serve.  PLEASE ALSO EDITORIALIZE LOCALLY about how your newspaper is relevant to your community.  This can be about your government watchdog role, coverage of community events, providing timely public notices, etc.
Following NNW, these materials will remain on the website and can be accessed by newspapers for use throughout the year since our message is timeless.

We deeply appreciate your participation and support.

For more information or to download NNW materials for free, please visit  www.nationalnewspaperweek.com. A 4-part Newspaper In Education series, Your Newspaper Works for You with complete teacher's guide is available from NYNPA.

This series is geared for upper elementary students and up and highlights the important ways newspapers impact readers lives everyday. The features include spotlights on:
  • News - Your Place in the World,

North Carolina Publishers Mobilize Against Independent Contractor Threat
From Michael Zinser, President, The Zinser Law Firm, P.C.
For over a decade, North Carolina newspapers have enjoyed a legislative presumption of independent contractor status under the state's Workers' Compensation law. This is a tremendous advantage for newspapers in Workers' Comp litigation. In fact, since the passage of this legislative presumption, there has been little - if any - challenge to independent contractor status under the state's Workers' Compensation law.

Earlier this year, legislation was introduced into both Houses of the Legislature to not only repeal the legislative presumption, but to also add independent contractor "unfriendly" language to the statutory
test for independent contractor status.

Under the leadership of North Carolina Press Association President Regina Glaspie, Publishers mobilized to oppose this legislation. Publishers attended legislation sessions in person, and reached out to legislators via telephone, e-mail, and social media. A full-court press occurred.

At least one newspaper editorialized against the bill, making a First Amendment argument.  Click here to read the editorial and more.

David Chavern
Newspaper Association of America has announced that its board of directors has selected David Chavern, a seasoned public policy and advocacy leader, as its new president and CEO, effective October 14, 2015. AP to expand data-driven journalism with $400,000 from Knight
From AP Press Release
The Associated Press today announced an effort to expand public access to critical information and bring data journalism to a wider array of news organizations with $400,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

With the funding, AP will add additional data journalists to its team and increase its distribution of data sets that include localized information to thousands of news organizations. This expansion will lead to more collaborative projects with newsrooms across the country. AP will also establish and distribute data journalism best practices as an addendum to the 2017 Associated Press Stylebook, focusing on style, ethics and standards. Additionally, it will create an online portal where customers can download market-specific information.

"Data has become essential to the 21st century newsroom," said Brian Carovillano, AP's vice president for U.S. news. "The volume of data available grows exponentially each year, but this comes as many news organizations are grappling with challenges that make retraining staff and reallocating resources more difficult than ever. Our goal is to help them be part of this revolution."  More
