FAMILY ENGAGEMENT IN EDUCATION
- TIP OF THE MONTH -
Scholastic Offers Parents Suggestions for Playing with Poetry

Here's one tip: Read it aloud. Many adults are intimidated by the conventions of poetic form, but poetry - especially children's poetry - is full of wonder, energy, and a sense of humor. Read poetry by different poets to find those you like; a love of poetry is contagious, so be enthusiastic!

Free for NYNPA members and aligned to the Common Core State Standards
The 12 lessons in this teaching guide are designed to be startingpoints for implementation of instruction to expand students' knowledge of the use and abuse of the natural resources in the state of New York and elsewhere, and of efforts to meet the need for resource conservation and stewardship. These lessons employ the daily newspaper's current and archival wealth as a source of information, investigation and source material for instruction. Each lesson is aligned to both the NYS Learning Standards and the new Common Core State Standards.

Newest Approach for Teaching Social Studies - Inquiry Design Model
The Inquiry Design Model (IDM) is an approach for developing inquiry that features the core elements of the C3 Framework's Inquiry Arc. Beginning with a compelling question and standards alignment, the model suggests a series of supporting questions, related formative performance tasks, and sources for completing these tasks. The IDM model culminates with a summative performance task and plan for taking informed action.

Visit http://www.c3teachers.org/idm/ to download a word doc copy of the blueprint and a Inquiry Design Model at a glance document to understand how compelling questions should be formatted.

New York State is adapting this approach and working on a K-12 Social Studies Resource Toolkit and Professional Development.  Click here for more about this Toolkit project at Binghamton University.

EGBAR comic The EGBAR Foundation's EGBARŽ Clean-Up Challenge is designed to educate children with the use of a newspaper. Most of the lessons included in the curriculum involve cut and paste activities. This design allowed the curriculum to virtually never become outdated due to the current topics offered by the newspaper. (EGBAR is an acronym for Everything's Gonna Be All Right)

In addition to the lessons and projects offered to coincide with the use of a newspaper, there are many environmental projects that can be done without it. Such as an environmental scavenger hunt or just finding out about basic environmental facts!

Download The EGBAR Clean-Up Challenge Curriculum Guide.

Download and print out your very own EGBAR Coloring Book, featuring EGBAR in different poses that you can color any way you like!

Download The EGBAR Coloring Book.

Newspaper planter Every day is Earth Day for people who care about the environment. But for one day each year, people all over the world join forces to call attention to the beauty of the Earth and the ways in which we can protect it.  Here are some quick Newspaper In Education ideas to share with your teachers:
  • Ask students to pick one product advertised in the newspaper and discuss the effects that product might have on the environment.
  • Have students find a story or photo in the paper that causes them concern about the environment and explain why.
  • Instruct students to look through the newspaper for items that can be recycled or reused. Ask them to list the items and find out how each can be recycled in your community. If recycling is not an option - can the items be re-purposed in any way? Finish the lesson by having students come up with their own ways to recycle newspapers (use as wrapping paper, paper mache, etc.). Encourage them to be creative.
