After 'incredible life in this business,' Observer-Dispatch's Donovan retiring
From uticaod.com
Donna Donovan
Donna Donovan, president and publisher of the Observer-Dispatch, announced her retirement during a staff meeting on Feb. 5. Donovan has held that position since 1991.

What many Observer-Dispatch employees remember when first meeting then-Executive Editor Donna Hagemann is her enthusiasm for the news.

O-D Opinion Editor David Dudajek recalled when Hagemann - now President and Publisher Donna Donovan - first became editor of The Daily Press and Observer-Dispatch in 1981, she said she sometimes "gets so excited about a news story she might jump over a desk."

"She was full of energy," he said. "She never really lost her enthusiasm or energy."

After 40 years of bringing these qualities to the industry, Donovan on Wednesday announced her retirement. She will leave at the end of March.

"I have had an absolutely wonderful, remarkable, incredible life in this business," Donovan said after her initial announcement during her quarterly O-D Update to the newspaper staff.

She said the timing to retire was appropriate so she could spend more time with her family.

Donovan began her career with the O-D as the first woman appointed to a top editor role in Utica.

After stints as president and publisher of papers in South Dakota at the Sioux Falls Argus Leader and Vermont's Burlington Free Press - where she also was the first woman in those top positions - Donovan returned to the Mohawk Valley in 1991 as president and publisher of the Observer-Dispatch.

Since then, Donovan has led the organization through the sale and transition from Gannett Co. Inc. to GateHouse Media, initiated community programs celebrating local successes as well as introduced new sections to appeal to readers and advertisers, among others.

"Her vast experience, honesty and practicality made her a frequent partner for me," said Brad Dennison, senior vice president of publishing at GateHouse. "She's a great executive and an even better human being." More

American Press Institute announces major project to improve fact-checking journalism
From americanpressinstitute.org
The American Press Institute ("API") announced today that it has received a grant of up to $400,000 over two years from the Democracy Fund. The grant will support research to improve political fact checking. The Institute will also work with news outlets to significantly increase the adoption of fact checking practices as well as contribute to public debates on the topic.

The Democracy Fund invests in social entrepreneurs working to ensure that our political system is responsive to the priorities of the American public and has the capacity to meet the greatest challenges facing our country.

"Helping citizens know what is true and what is not is at the core of journalism's purpose. Almost everything in public life flows from this foundation-understanding, common ground and a working political system," American Press Institute Executive Director Tom Rosenstiel said.

"Fact-checking of statements made by politicians and pundits is emerging as a growing, and we believe, essential practice in political reporting. The American Press Institute will use its extensive networks within the news media, along with its credibility as a research group, to advance, refine, and defend this vital journalistic practice," said Tom Glaisyer of the Democracy Fund.

The project will coordinate new research by scholars from six universities, combine that with the work of other scholars and API's own research to identify what kinds of fact checking are most effective at stopping misleading rhetoric and are most informative to citizens. In the second year, API will conduct workshops, meetings and develop other resources aimed at supporting news organizations interested in factchecking on the eve of the 2016 election cycle.

API is hiring a project manager to run the program.

Best and worst times to post on social media
From socialtimes.com

infographicAll social media are not created equal. Each social network has different kinds of users and their daily activities vary. Determining when to post on social media requires that you consider your product or service and the kinds of messages relevant to your customers. A local business, for example, may find that the ideal time to post updates is different from that of a national brand. Always keep track of analytics and try mixing up your social media schedule.
