FAMILY ENGAGEMENT IN EDUCATION
- TIP OF THE MONTH -
Reading Homework Tips for Parents:
  • Have your child read aloud to you every night.
  • Choose a quiet place, free from distractions, for your child to do his nightly reading assignments.

  • As your child reads, point out spelling and sound patterns such as cat, pat, hat.

  • After your child has stopped to correct a word he has read, have him go back and reread the entire sentence from the beginning to make sure he understands what the sentence is saying.

  • Ask your child to tell you in her own words what happened in a story.

  • Ask your child why she thinks a character acted in a certain way and ask your child to support her answer with information from the story.

  • Before getting to the end of a story, ask your child what he thinks will happen next and why.

Click here for a copy of the newspaper agreement form.

The story is set during the U.S. Civil war in Elmira.  Here's a quick plot summary:

It's 1864, and Betsy Harrington has one thing on her mind: Her older brother, Jim, a POW at the prison camp in Andersonville, Georgia. And life in Elmira offers few distractions, with the Union prison for Confederate soldiers right there in town. She can't understand why the war widow she works for and the former slave who is sexton of her church don't share her bitterness towards the rebel prisoners. That is not until the night Betsy is confronted with a young Southerner who shares her brother's intense desire to get home, and needs her help to do it.

Contact Mary Miller at [email protected] if you have any questions about this project.

Free NIE and teaching resources
Here is a list of NIE and other resources that teachers can use to enhance their students' education.

Mini - NIE activity: Look through the newspaper for an article that shows individuals, groups or nations involved in a conflict. Write down the different sides, and what seems to be the reason or reasons for their struggles. Think of as many different ways as you can that they might resolve this conflict. Discuss as a class how the people, groups or nations can resolve their issues. What character traits (courage, kindness, forgiveness, patience, etc) do you think these parties need to solve their conflict?
