Sent from the Nave, to the Undercroft, to the World
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
|
Here's the thing about resurrected life: Where it leads may surprise us, but Jesus is there all the way. Last Sunday, we worshipped in the undercroft for the first time; and I heard comments like this: "That was so much fun, I'm not sure we'll want to go back upstairs!" Led by Mtr. Anne and Karen Von Der Bruegge, Altar Guild members transformed the undercroft into truly holy space; people sang with vigor; and I had to call an end to the Peace - a good problem to have. As the nave is undergoing its renovation - this week, the floor tiles being removed and the concrete under it being scrubbed - we discover something we already knew: that Jesus is with us wherever we go, even to worship downstairs. This Sunday, April 14, is a very important day in the life of our parish community, as our bishop visits to baptize, confirm, and receive people into the Episcopal Church. If we could have scripted things, none of us would have chosen to celebrate these sacramental moments in the undercroft rather than in our beautiful, historic nave. But even still, I believe we'll encounter God's Spirit this Sunday in ways we wouldn't expect - transforming "the basement" into God's temple once again, empowering our baptismal and confirmation candidates for ministry in the world, and reminding all of us that Jesus is looking us in the eye when he says to Peter, in Sunday's Gospel reading, "Do you love me? Follow me."
Look for pictorial updates on twitter and facebook throughout the week; here are two pictures to give you an idea of what you'll see:
A prayer attributed to Archbishop Oscar Romero
Submitted by a seed planter It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is even beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God's work. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. please click here to read the rest of this prayer |
