City of Albuquerque partners with Special Olympics New Mexico

The City of Albuquerque, the office of Mayor Richard J. Berry and Special Olympics New Mexico are pleased to announce a new and improved partnership in 2016.

"As this partnership grows, we hope to bring more Special Olympics events to the Duke City," said Mayor Richard J. Berry.

In 2016, Special Olympics New Mexico athletes will be using more city facilities than ever before. Besides the Convention Center's Indoor Track, which is where the 2016 Mayor's Indoor Invitational Track Meet took place on February 20th, SONM is using more than fifteen City of Albuquerque facilities throughout the year. From several community centers and baseball fields to the city's swimming pool facilities, golf courses, and the Balloon Fiesta Park, SONM will use these facilities year-round for state competitions as well as weekly team practices.

"One of the most valuable sports partnerships SONM has established is with the City of Albuquerque," stated SONM Executive Director Randy Mascorella. "Not only do we use their facilities to provide quality training and competition for our athletes locally, but we also host regional and statewide tournaments at their venues, as well.  The City of Albuquerque has shown nothing short of full support of our Special Olympics athletes."

Thank you City of Albuquerque Parks & Recreation Department and Mayor Berry for creating more opportunities for our athletes.
Thank you Poly Hockey Sponsors!

The 2016 State Poly Hockey Championships will take place this weekend in Farmington. Athletes from across the state have been practicing and competing in Area Competitions in preparation for one of SONM's most high-intensity sporting events. We are excited to be a part of all of the fun this weekend, which wouldn't be possible without all of our sponsors. Thank you for giving SONM athletes the opportunity to participate in this event.

Mayor's Indoor Track Meet brings out athletes of all shapes and sizes

This year's Mayor's Indoor Invitational Track Meet took place last Saturday, February 20th. And per usual, it was a wonderful experience for athletes, volunteers, coaches and spectators.

Over 120 athletes were present to compete on the Convention Center's Indoor Track,  which by the way is one of the finest in the nation. The UNM Lobo Football team  volunteered as escorts and timers and Bernaillo County Sheriff's Department awarded the athletes who competed.

As an exciting addition to this year's Track Meet, Olympic Track & Field Medalists Jarrin Solomon and Ade Alleyne-Forte also handed out medals and took photos with our athletes.

Thank you to all of the volunteers, athletes, and of course to City of ABQ Parks & Recreation Department and Mayor Richard J. Berry for making this competition possible!

Best Buddies and SONM are Spreading the Word to End the Word!

This March Special Olympics New Mexico and Best Buddies New Mexico are teaming up to Spread the Word to End the Word! Starting on February 25, 2016 we are encouraging all of our participants to engage in a social media blast to create awareness about eliminating the "R-Word" from our vocabulary and showing our communities what Respect and Inclusion mean to them!

From February 25th to March 18th we are asking participants to use the following social media tags with corresponding pictures that demonstrate what Inclusion and Respect look like and mean to them. As your group organizes activities and R-Word events, snap pictures, shoot videos, and tag them with #thisISrespect and #inclusionrevolution.

Prizes will be awarded for most creative, and the most likes! Get out there and show the world what friendship and inclusion are all about!
Be a "rebel with a cause" at Rebel Donut in March!
On March 2nd, in honor of Spread the Word to End the Word Day, Rebel Donut on Wyoming and Candelaria will be selling special Anti R-Word donuts. But that's not all - they will continue to sell these donuts every Wednesday throughout March! Fifty cents per donut will be donated back to SONM.

Stop by Rebel Donut every Wednesday this month to help us Spread the Word to End the Word, support SONM, and eat a darn good donut from an awesome local business!
