Milestones

The past few weeks Special Olympics New Mexico has celebrated the growth of our state's Law Enforcement Torch Run, begun the work of creating our next multi-year strategic plan, and thoroughly enjoyed a successful Unified Team Bowling Tournament.  Each of these have served as reminders of the journey taken to get where we are today.  Within those journeys, there have been milestones along the way - milestones that represent progress and warrant celebration.

Milestones mean different things to different people, but perhaps one of the greatest perspectives was shared with me by a Special Olympics mom.

SONM receives grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NM for ProjectUNIFY

Special Olympics New Mexico announced today that it received a $17,000 grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) through its Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® initiative. These funds will allow SONM to expand its ProjectUNIFY programs, which provide students inclusive sports opportunities at their schools.

"We're proud to give our support to Special Olympics New Mexico's Young Athletes and ProjectUNIFY programs as a Healthy Kids, Healthy Families partner," said Janice Torrez, Divisional Vice President of External Affairs for BCBSNM. "Through its work, we expect to see measurable improvement in children's health by creating opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities to be active during the school day, while also building leadership skills for their non-disabled peers."

Special Olympics New Mexico's ProjectUNIFY and Young Athletes programs provide students with and without intellectual disabilities opportunities to participate in sports activities alongside one another during the school day.

"Evidence of a win-win partnership is shown by its tenure, growth, and impact on people," stated SONM Executive Director Randy Mascorella. "BCBSNM's commitment to Special Olympics New Mexico's ProjectUNIFY and Young Athletes initiatives has not only stood the test of time, but it has helped to change attitudes about people challenged with disabilities through inclusive sports.  There is no doubt that schools who have embraced this program are now more welcoming and able to celebrate all students for their unique value and accomplishments."

This guy is biking across America for Special Olympics!

This winter, Special Olympics Ohio volunteer and outdoor enthusiast Tom Helbig is riding his bike across the country on the Southern Tier Bicycle Route to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics.
Tom Helbig

He has supported Special Olympics programs in the states that he has ridden through so far and intends to continue that trend. Tom started his journey in San Diego, rode through Arizona, and is now in Silver City. He will travel through Hatch and Las Cruces in upcoming days. Cool huh?

If anyone in Las Cruces is interested in welcoming Tom, meeting with Tom, or even swimming, running or biking with Tom, please let the SONM office know and we will pass on the message. Call us at 505-856-0342 or email us at eringallegos@sonm.org.
