Thoughts from Randy
Todd and Matt

The World Games ended two weeks ago, but the truth is it still feels like they are going on.  We are still telling stories, doing interviews, watching highlights on ESPN, and re-living the many moments that make all of us proud of every Special Olympics athlete who was there.

As you may or may not know, New Mexico sent two rhythmic gymnasts, and a Unified Golf Team, made up of Special Olympics athlete Matthew Scates and his Unified Partner, Todd Phillips.  I have chosen to share an email we received from Todd, mainly because his thoughts say a lot about the World Games experience from a non-disabled athlete, who competed in these amazing Games.

Four Corners Invitational kicks off this Friday!

This Friday and Saturday, August 21-22, Special Olympics athletes, coaches, and Unified Partners from all over the state will travel to Farmington for the final state competition of the summer season.

With almost 600 athletes, 350 Partners, and over 100 coaches, the Four Corners  Invitational (FCI) is SONM's largest competition outside of Albuquerque and draws support from all over the Farmington community.  This competition features three Unified Sports - which means that individuals with and without disabilities play on teams together. Unified Golf, Unified Softball and Unified Aquatics relays promote acceptance and inclusion.

If you're in the Farmington area, come watch the spirited competition! See the schedule below for details.

Check one more item off your adventure Bucket List and rappel 16-stories Over the Edge!

Think you've done it all? How about a rappel off the side of a building in the heart of downtown Albuquerque?

Over the Edge is a unique event that gives its participants the opportunity to challenge themselves and inspire others to raise funds for Special
J.W. Sutphin rappeling in 2014
Olympics. Participating has never been easier with the $500 minimum fundraising goal.

"The beauty of Special Olympics is that it provides many different options for raising  money for the athletes, and Over the Edge is a very unique opportunity for a person looking for a new way to give to get involved," stated J.W. Sutphin, one of last year's participants. "I tell all my friends that I am going Over the Edge and they can support the program with as little as a $10 donation. With the minimum participation goal of $500 this year, it takes just a few emails and a posting on my Facebook page to raise that amount."

Over the Edge will take place on Friday, September 18th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the New Mexico Bank & Trust Building located 4th Street between Gold & Silver. There is still a month to raise at least $500 to participate in the rappel. Challenge yourself today! Learn more and sign up by clicking HERE.
Last chance to support SONM at Subway!

For the next two weeks until August 31st, more than 150 local SUBWAY® restaurants will participate in the "You Share. We Share." campaign to help support Special Olympics New Mexico.

The "You Share. We Share" campaign encourages the community to get out and share their weekends with SUBWAY® restaurants, and SUBWAY® will share right back by donating a percentage of weekend sales, up to $25,000, directly to Special Olympics New Mexico.  As locally owned and operated franchises, SUBWAY® is excited to be able to further its commitment to the local community.

Be sure to stop by your local SUBWAY® this weekend and don't miss your chance to support SONM through this great campaign.
Reveal the Champion with Special Olympics New Mexico

Most people know that Special Olympics New Mexico provides sports training & competition for athletes throughout the state. But did you know that we are doing a lot more as we strive to Build Inclusive Communities, Transform Lives through Sport, and Improve Quality of Life for our Athletes?

Learn about everything we are doing in the community at one of our Reveal the Champion Mission Tours. It's a one-hour lunch tour at the Special Olympics New Mexico state office where you will hear from SONM staff and board members, an athlete, and a parent. You leave with a box lunch and a little more knowledge about what SONM is doing all over our state.
