Thoughts From Randy
Proud

Early on in my involvement with Special Olympics I remember someone telling me how sad it was that parents whose children are born with developmental disabilities are robbed of feeling proud of their kid.  This morning I was thinking about that statement so, I contacted two of our Special Olympics parents to find out if they were proud of their kid - and if so - why?

Poly Hockey teams hit the rinks this weekend!

The State Poly Hockey Championships take place this month, from February 27th-28th and SONM athletes from Areas 2, 4, and 5 will be participating in Area Competitions this weekend.

These Area Competitions are the first opportunity that Poly Hockey teams will have a  chance to compete against each other and showcase the skills that they have been practicing since the beginning of January.  We expect a good day, full of high-energy competition!

Keep your head in the game - or out - with the Concussion & Safety Recognition Policy

It is Special Olympics' intent to take steps to help ensure the health and safety of all Special Olympics participants. All Special Olympics participants should remember that safety comes first and should take reasonable steps to help minimize the risks for concussion or other serious brain injuries.

Effective January 1, 2015, a participant who is suspected of sustaining a concussion in a practice, game or competition shall be removed from practice, play or competition at that time. If a qualified medical professional is available on-site to render an evaluation, that person shall have final authority as to whether or not a concussion is suspected. If applicable, the participant's parent or guardian should be made aware that the participant is suspected of sustaining a concussion. "When in doubt, sit them out."

All coaches are required to complete one of the following concussion awareness training courses:
1)    The Center for Disease Control's (CDC) Heads-Up Concussion in Youth Sports training course, which is available HERE

2)   National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHSA) Concussion in Sports training course which is available HERE

Certificate of Completion must be submitted to the SONM Chapter Office.

Law Enforcement Torch Run News!

Four Corners LETR's 2015 Polar Plunge raises $10,900 for Special Olympics!

On Saturday January 24th Farmington Police Department hosted its annual Four Corner's LETR Polar Plunge for Special Olympics-bringing together dozens of families and local businesses to raise pledge-based funds for a celebratory jump into a freezing pool set up in the parking lot of Rickett's Park.

Plungers raised a minimum of $100 in donations ($50 for kids 10 & under) and combined with local business sponsorships the event raised some $10,900! Even Farmington's PD's Chief of Police Steve Hebbe took the plunge!

Special thanks goes out NW Region LETR Agency Coordinators Shawn Archuleta (Retired) and Officer Jenny Dennis for organizing the event, as well as to all participating law enforcement agencies, and the Farmington community for another huge success!

Everyone Creates - Support our Athlete Artists!

This Friday, February 6th Very Special Arts will be hosting an opening reception for their Everyone Creates event at the North Four Art Center. This event is part of "On the Map: Unfolding Albuquerque Art + Design," which is a cultural partnership that celebrates the art of Central New Mexico by over 20 partnering organizations.

Everyone-- including students, teachers and administrators from North Fourth Art Center-- is anonymously represented (until purchase) by works in 8x8 square-inch format in everything from painting and drawing to ceramic and collage. The range of media and styles from a center providing education and training in the arts for adults with disabilities demonstrates the unique abilities of everyone. The opening reception will take place from 5-7pm on February 6th, during the first Friday ARTSCrawl.
