Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Special Olympics 2014 USA Games in Princeton, New Jersey.  I loved being there because first of all - my sole responsiblity was cheering for Team New Mexico - and secondly - the Games were incredible!  Congratulations, New Jersey and thank you athletes.

Congratulations Team New Mexico!

Team New Mexico returned from New Jersey just over a week ago, each with medals in hand and stories to share! Click HERE to see photos that we have received from some of our athletes and coaches! Team New Mexico athletes, coaches, and parents, if you have any more great photos from the Games that you would like to share, email them to Erin Gallegos at eringallegos@sonm.org and we will share them on Facebook!

Law Enforcement Torch Run News!

7-Eleven raises $25,000 for Special Olympics New Mexico

On May 29th the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics and its community partner 7-Eleven celebrated the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho convenience stores' third consecutive record-breaking torch icon campaign for Special Olympics New Mexico's athletes and sports program. For six weeks throughout April and May, 7-Eleven employees helped LETR "fuel the flame" by selling torch icons for $1 to its patrons, and raising awareness of local Special Olympics athletes.

"Every 7-Eleven employee and patron of those stores need to know that by selling and purchasing those icons, New Mexico's children and adults with intellectual disabilities are being given the chance to leave the sidelines of life and experience the joy of sport, and all that goes with it," said Special Olympics New Mexico Executive Director Randy Mascorella. "It's not fun going through life being teased and excluded. 7-Eleven and their patrons continue to make possible what every person with an intellectual disability hopes for- the chance to have friends and be included."

Before offering a series of praise to each of his 7-Eleven stores, Corley shared an emotional anecdote that illustrated just how much and how quickly each year's fundraising total has increased since 7-Eleven first partnered with the Torch Run for Special Olympics in 2011.

Over the four years 7-Eleven has raised more than $70,000 for Special Olympics New Mexico.

League of Edgers meet up excites and inspires new and returning LETR's Over The Edge participants

On Wednesday, June 28th a group of adventure seekers and bucket-list makers gathered to celebrate their "journey to the edge" over plenty of conversations about fundraising and rappelling.

The group is known as the League of Edgers-dedicated Edgers who rally each other up with inspirational conversation about the Law Enforcement Torch Run's Over The Edge (OTE) for Special Olympics. The League meet ups the last Wednesday of every month at 5:00pm, and is a chance for registered participants to swap event and/or fundraising stories, offer tips and tools, and share in the anticipation of going Over The Edge for Special Olympics in September.

"Over The Edge offers you the opportunity to face your fears and to overcome a challenge in your life so that our Special Olympics athletes can overcome the challenges in theirs. The moment you start your 'journey to the edge', you're on a fulfilling path that helps Special Olympics provide people with intellectual disabilities an endless sense of joy from sports," said OTE Planing Committee Chair Oscar Solis.

Registration is available online at www.OverTheEdgeNM.com, and involves setting up a personal fundraising page via Firstgiving.com-a fast and safe site for raising and tracking funds toward a participants goal online. The minimum goal a participant can set is $1,000. Sign up today and/or attend a League of Edgers meet up this month! The next Edgers meet up is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30th at 5:00pm at Marble Brewery in Downtown ABQ.
