Thoughts From Randy
Shine

Some of my most enlightening moments happen when a Special Olympics athlete randomly walks into my office, plops down in a chair, and takes charge of my attention.  Such would be the case last week, when one of our athletes shared his thoughts about the upcoming State Summer Games.  "I love the Games, Wandy, because when I'm there, it is MY TIME TO SHINE!" Before I could ask him exactly what he meant by that he was out the door, leaving me with my own thoughts on the matter, which are as follows.

Most athletes shine when they excel at the sport they are playing.  Special Olympics athletes shine by serving as a bright light to those around them.  It is in that light that we as nondisabled people see and are seen more clearly.

Thank you 2014 State Summer Games Sponsors!

Healthy Athletes venues return to Summer Games Olympic Village!

Health has a vital bearing on the quality of life for individuals with intellectual disabilities and significantly affects an athlete's ability to train and compete.

Recognizing the importance of further promoting the health of our athletes, Special Olympics New Mexico offers the Healthy Athletes® Initiative, addressing the disparity in health care that individuals with intellectual disabilities face by providing free health screenings to athletes at Special Olympics events. Special Olympics New Mexico (SONM) provides Healthy Athletes® screenings to all athletes state-wide, in the following areas: Opening Eyes (vision), Special Smiles (dentistry), Fit Feet (podiatry), and Fun Fitness (physical therapy).

On Saturday, May 31st, SONM will once again be teaming up with United Blood Services to offer the Special Olympics Blood Drive at the State Summer Games. The Blood Drive will take place from 8:30 am- 2:00 pm in the parking lot south of the UNM Track and Field Stadium.  Find the hero in you and sign up to donate - up to three lives can be saved for every one donation, and your donation can potentially aid many of our athletes who experience medical issues. To sign up, contact Christine Roybal at 505-856-0342 or visit www.unitedbloodservices.org and enter the sponsor code: SO. Be sure to bring a photo ID! View the flyer below for more information.

SONM supports Operation Kidsafe!

Operation Kidsafe and Mark's Casa Auto Group, in partnership with Special Olympics New Mexico, announce the "grand re-opening" of digital fingerprinting stations at all three Mark's Casa Auto Group locations on June 5th-7th. Operation Kidsafe equipment captures your child's photo and fingerprints, and parents are given a printout with the information on it that they can provide to law enforcement anywhere in the world to instantly aid with an emergency.
