This year's State Summer Games theme is "Compete With The Best."  I like themes that mean different things to different people - themes that can be personalized.

The first time I saw our theme in print I was drawn to the word WITH, which according to one definition means "in opposition to against."  Here's how I see that.  Under the banner of these State Summer Games, Special Olympics New Mexico will offer competition in Unified Soccer, Unified Bocce, Unified Volleyball, Unified Track Relays, and Unified Rhythmic Gymnastics.  For those of you unfamiliar with the concept - unified sports partners Special Olympics athletes with nondisabled athletes, as they train and compete together on the same team.

Mayfield Project Unify Track Meet a great success!

The second annual Project Unify Track Meet at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces was once again a major success! Students from Mayfield High School, Onate High School, Centennial High School, Zia Middle School, Mesa Middle School, and Vista Middle School were in attendance, with each school bringing between 30 and 80 participants with and without intellectual disabilities.

Project Unify is an education-based initiative that aims to incorporate Special Olympics Unified Sports programs into schools in order to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for people with intellectual disabilities.

"This is our second year hosting the Project Unify Track Meet and it went really well," said Morgan Harding, host of the event at Mayfield HS. "Since last year, we have at least doubled our numbers and overall awareness has greatly increased. You can really see the students feeling more included after each Project Unify event we have."

Parents, Las Cruces Public Schools administrative staff, and classes from all the schools were in attendance to watch the six schools compete.

"My favorite part of Project Unify was making friends," said a non-disabled Partner from Onate HS. "It's not about winning, it's about creating equality and having fun."

Las Cruces Project Unify Leader named National Guard Inspirational Athlete!

Alyssa Covarrubia is a sophomore at Onate Elementary School in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and she is also the sister of Special Olympics New Mexico athlete Keith Covarrubia. Inspired by her brother and his love for sports, Alyssa became heavily involved in Advocates in Action - a student club at Onate that seeks to educate the student body about disability-related issues.

Because of her leadership within the club and passion for spreading the word about people with disabilities, she has been awarded a National Guard Inspirational Athlete award. These awards are presented to 15 students all across the country who show outstanding community involvement.

"I learned acceptance the minute he was born," Covarrubia said. "Most people think of people with special needs as beneath them, and they don't need their respect. People don't understand them, and therefore they don't know how to react."

Now in her second year in the club, Alyssa serves as president and plays a large role in organizing the annual Project Unify Softball Game, where students with and without an intellectual disability play against each other in recreational competition.

  Law Enforcement Torch Run News!

NORTHWEST Region LETR's Chili's Tip-A-Cop raises $22,600 at Chili's Tip-A-Cop

On April 4th and 5th, the Northwest Region (aka Four Corners) Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics held their annual Chili's Tip-A-Cop fundraiser, raising a total of $22,600 for Special Olympics New Mexico.

Led by LETR Farmington PD officers, these remarkable Guardians of the Flame volunteered as celebrity servers and performed restaurant responsibilities such as, greeting and seating guests, waiting on tables, serving beverages and meals, and bussing tables. Local Special Olympics athletes and their families helped raise awareness of the mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run and the community impact of the Special Olympics sports program for people with intellectual disabilities.

The event surpassed previous fund raising goals by over $4,000. All funds raised will support state and local competition for Special Olympics athletes. Special thanks to all participating LETR agencies, Chili's Restaurant, and the town of Farmington for their support.
