Thoughts From Randy
Rooting

The past couple weeks I have been in the company of several of our Special Olympics athletes, who have given short speeches about their lives.  I continue to be absolutely amazed at the courage they have to stand in front of audiences and share their stories.

Most of their speeches aren't "polished" making them very real.  Sometimes the athletes will mispronounce a word or lose their place on the paper.  Some even come to a complete stop - seemingly not quite sure how to start again.  It is during these times I pay close attention to the audience.  Here's what I observe.

Law Enforcement Torch Run News!

7-Eleven needs your help to beat fundraising record!

Last year, 7-Eleven presented the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics with a total of $16,303 raised from their April 2013 campaign.  All 23 stores in the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho area sold torch icons for $1 each expanding the awareness of Special Olympics.

7-Eleven employees are back and ready to beat last year's record, but they need your help! During the entire month of April (and for a couple weeks in May), stop in at any of the ABQ and Rio Rancho stores, and purchase your torch icon to help the Law Enforcement Torch Run and our community partner grow Special Olympics!

Find the location nearest you by clicking HERE and make your way over to any 7-Eleven and purchase a SONM LETR icon. And don't forget your gas and drink.

Guns vs. Hoses Hockey Challenge raises over $3,000

[Albuquerque, NM] - On Saturday, March 22, 2014, SOUTH CENTRAL Region LETR officers from local police and firefighter departments participated in a Guns vs. Hoses Hockey Challenge at the Outpost Ice Arena in Albuquerque. The event raised over $3,000 for Special Olympics New Mexico's athletes and sports program.

Nearly 300 LETR and hockey fans came out to show their support, and they were rewarded with numerous autographed sports memorabilia, family activities, and photo opps with their local law enforcement community.

Special thanks to volunteers emcee Matt Webster, photographer Scott Adamson, Jen Geier, Special Olympics ABQ Dukes athletes and coaches, and the Outpost Ice Arena staff for their support of our Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics program, and our local law enforcement officers. It was a great day for hockey! Visit www.facebook.com/NMLETR to view photos from the Guns vs. Hoses Hockey Challenge.
Welcome Scott Hardy!

We are pleased to announce the hiring of our new Torch Run Liaison, Scott Hardy! Scott comes to us from an Albuquerque law office - as the Torch Run Liaison he hopes to both learn new skills and cultivate his existing skills from past administrative positions. He is looking forward to working with SONM and hopes that being involved will help him to feel he's making a difference in the community

We are excited to have him join the team. Be sure to stop by and welcome him to the Special Olympics family.
