Letters

Last week I received a large brown envelope filled with letters.  The first was from an eighth grade teacher - the other 28 from her English Language Arts class.  They had completed a "Spread the Word to End the R-Word" campaign in their school, and through a variety of creative ways - raised $407.75 for Special Olympics.  I read each and every letter - some more than once - and at a time when we, the general public, are rarely given opportunities to hear what 8th graders have to say - I feel obligated to share their comments with you.  Enjoy.

USA Games Team New Mexico athletes begin training!

With the 2014 USA Games just about six months away, Team New Mexico is already training hard to prepare for their trip to New Jersey!

"Our training went great," said Linda Charzuk, Head Bocce Coach for Team New Mexico. "The four teammates are compatible. They already have skills and a good understanding of the game. They are also very accepting of new strategies and are all willing to learn. This is one of the best teams I've worked with!"

New Mexico's USA Games Bowling team has already made progress working together as a team.

"The trainings we've had in Albuquerque and Las Cruces have gone so well," stated Allie Stapleton, Head Bowling Coach for Team New Mexico. "I think the athletes are going to do awesome this summer! We are working on how to adapt to different kinds of bowling lanes and adjust in order to perform better. Since our first training, all of the teammates have created a bond. We will be ready for New Jersey!"

Great things are expected from Team New Mexico this summer in New Jersey!

Area Poly Hockey Competitions!

The 2014 Area Poly Hockey Competitions are this weekend! Areas 1, 2, and 5 will take to the rinks, competing in one of SONM's most popular team sports.

This is the first time this season that Poly Hockey teams will get to compete against each other before the statewide championship in Farmington on February 21-22! Athletes and coaches have been practicing hard and we expect good-spirited play from everyone! For more information about the Area and State Poly Hockey Championships, click HERE

Congratulations to our 2014 French Athletes of the Game!

Every year, in partnership with French Funerals and Mortuaries and Lobo Athletics, SONM has the opportunity to honor 27 Special Olympics athletes from different delegations at UNM Lobo games!

In 2014 we  have recognized six different athletes at Lobo Men's and Women's Basketball games! We would like to congratulate the athletes who have been honored so far this year and also thank French Funerals and Mortuaries for their continued partnership!
