Thoughts From Randy
Fear NOT

Last week Special Olympics New Mexico held our fifth Over the Edge fundraising event.  My role is to position myself at the bottom of the building with microphone in hand, and as people step backwards off the roof and begin scaling the sixteen stories marina 2downward - talk about who Special Olympics is, what we're doing, and why we are there.

Thanks to our 2013 Over the Edge for Special Olympics New Mexico sponsors!

A great time was had by all at Over the Edge this year! Our thanks to the staff from Over the Edge, all rope volunteers, and the 69 amazing rappellers who raised at least $1,000 to face their fears and support SONM!

Celebrating Mrs. Shriver!

This year marks the 4th annual Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) Day - celebrated on Saturday, September 28th. In 2012, over 150 Programs worldwide celebrated our founder with Unified SportsŪ events, Family Forums, Healthy Athletes programs and Youth Activation Summits. The 2013 EKS Day "Play Unified to Live Unified," encourages people both with and without intellectual disabilities to come together on playing fields, forget about our differences, and forge bonds that recognize our mutual humanity.

SONM is encouraging everyone to develop an activity that embraces Mrs. Shriver's example and celebrates her influence. Might we suggest backyard barbecues and Unified Bocce?

Law Enforcement Torch Run News!

NORTH Region LETR officers introduce Tip-A-Cop fund raiser to Sadies Restaurant in Santa Ana Casino

On September 14th, NORTH Region LETR officers from Santa Ana Police Department and Rio Rancho Police Department hosted a first-ever Tip-A-Cop fund raiser at Sadies Restaurant in the Santa Ana Casino.

The event raised over $1,700 in its inception, and brought LETR officers, as well as Sadies patrons and employees together to support Special Olympics New Mexico.  Meals and drinks were delivered to customers, which resulted in donations to Torch Run for Special Olympics. The night also included a Cover The Cruiser campaign, where patrons purchased enough Torch Run icons to fill an entire police car. Some ten Special Olympics Rio Rancho athletes joined in the event, which added a greater impact.

Special thanks to Sadies Restaurant leadership and staff for their partnership and support of Torch Run for Special Olympics!

SOUTH CENTRAL Region LETR officers raise nearly $4,000 at Applebee's Tip-A-Cop

On September 10th, SOUTH CENTRAL Region LETR officers from Albuquerque Police Department led a Tip-A-Cop fund raiser at all seven Applebee's locations in Albuquerque.

The citywide event brought in an official total of $3,995.27. The night featured officers partnership with Applebee's staff to serve meals and drinks, while spreading awareness for Special Olympics. Numerous local Special Olympics programs in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho joined officers in collecting donations and spreading awareness. Special thanks to the following SONM programs: Rio Rancho, Sandia Prep, Westside Wonders, Dukes, Manzano, and Albuquerque Gymnastics School.

Additional thanks goes out to Applebee's leadership and staff for the continued partnership and support of Torch Run for Special Olympics!
