It's Happening
A couple of weeks ago three of my staff and I had the opportunity to go to a Special Olympics North America Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. Over 700 people were in attendance, and not only was it a great reminder of the scope and depth of our Movement, but a promising look into the future regarding how the younger generation is changing the way our world sees those who are challenged with intellectual disabilities. Through participation in Special Olympics initiatives, young people are speaking, playing, and living unified. MORE >>> |

The Four Corners Invitational is one of seven Special Olympics New Mexico state competitions. During this competition, SONM athletes compete in Aquatics, Unified Golf, Unified Softball, and for the first time, Unified Flag Football.

Meet Martin!
Martin (pronounced Marteen) Wiggins is a Special Olympics athlete from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is 25 years old and has been involved in Special Olympics for many years. She competes for Special Olympics Manzano and The Rockin' Wranglers. Martin participates in Equestrian and Unified Golf and is an active member of Special Olympics! Martin has served as an athlete representative for SONM special events committees and  helped a great amount at this year's Golf Classic . She went Over the Edge in 2012 and can't wait to go again this year! Support Special Olympics athletes like Martin by fundraising for Over the Edge. Craig DeMartino - A guy you need to hear
Craig DeMartino is an accomplished rock climber, but after a climbing accident in 2002, Craig was dropped 100 feet to the ground in Colorado, suffering very severe injuries. After multiple surgeries, Craig chose to amputate his shattered right leg below the knee in hopes of returning to climbing and getting his life back. Once back on the rocks in 2004, Craig became the first amputee to climb El Capitan in Yosemite in under 24 hours. This past season Craig returned to Yosemite leading the first All Disabled Ascent of El Capitan with Pete Davis and Jarem Frye. The three are featured in the short film "Gimp Monkeys" (see below). On September 20th at 7 pm at NM State Bar Center, Craig will tell the story of his fall, his recovery, and how his disability has not held him back. Don't miss this unique and inspiring event! Save the Date: Posole Ole 2013!
This year's Posole Ole Fun Walk will take place on December 7th at the Anderson-Abruzzo International Balloon Museum.
The Posole Ole Fun Walk is a chance for all of us to kick off the Holiday season of giving-New Mexico style! Hundreds of walkers will come together to show their support of Special Olympics athletes. Each participant will walk the route around the balloon museum property, placing raffle tickets at drop-off points, hoping to win prizes donated by local merchants. All dollars raised go to support over 2,600 Special Olympics New Mexico athletes. More information about this year's event to come!
