Thoughts From Randy
A couple of weeks ago Special Olympics New Mexico hosted its first Unified Flag Football Competition. Twelve teams competed in an organized scrimmage, giving players and coaches the opportunity to run plays, make adjustments, and prepare for the State Competition, which will be held in Farmington on August 18th. Having never played this sport before in Special Olympics, I don't think anyone who was there really knew what to expect or what this night may have meant. MORE >>> |

Dinner & Auction wildly successful! New!
The 2013 Dinner & Auction not only brought hundreds of Special Olympics supporters together in the same room, but it also acquainted them with SONM athletes and our Games. The "mock Opening Ceremonies," which included a short "Torch Run," the National Anthem as only our very own Marla can sing it, the Athlete Oath, and the ever-charismatic MC Jamie Imai, warmed the hearts of all those in attendance. Thanks to the generous Dinner & Auction attendees, SONM raised $59,000! Along with the $62,850 of revenue raised at the Golf Classic, July was a successful fund and friend-raising month for SONM - giving more Special Olympics athletes more opportunities to compete in the sports they love.
Our thanks to The Payroll Company, the Presenting Sponsor of the Auction & Dinner, along with all of the sponsors and supporters who made this event a huge success! Click HERE to view photos from the event.

Meet Desiree! New!
Desiree Hanson is a Special Olympics athlete from Santa Fe, New Mexico. She now lives in Farmington with her husband Ryan. She is 29 years old and has been involved in Special Olympics since she was 8 years old. She plays for Special Olympics San Juan County and competes in Poly Hockey, Bowling, Bocce, Volleyball, Aquatics, Golf, and Basketball. Desiree is also involved with the Global Messengers program, which teaches Special Olympics athletes public speaking skills. Desiree is Brave - she went Over the Edge in 2010. "When I went Over the Edge I didn't want to look down because it looked like I was going to fall," said Desiree. "I was really scared so I went down tandem with someone else. It was hard but the best part was that I had fun. I am very happy to be a Special Olympics athlete and to have gone Over the Edge." You can support athletes like Desiree and give them more opportunities to participate in life by fundraising for Over the Edge. You can even send an athlete over in your place. LETR News! New!
Rio Rancho Chili's Tip-A-Cop raises over $1,000 for Special Olympics!
On Friday, July 26th officers from our NORTH CENTRAL Region Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) joined Special Olympics New Mexico athletes to raise over $1,000 and Special Olympics awareness during a Chili's Tip-A-Cop in Rio Rancho.
The day event raised $1,026, and was organized by agency coordinators and officers from the Rio Rancho Police Dept. and the Sandoval County Sheriff's Office. Additionally, over a dozen SONM athletes and family members from SONM Rio Rancho Rockets program helped LETR officers serve meals and speak to patrons. Funds raised will directly benefit local and state Special Olympics New Mexico sports programs--helping pay for sports equipment and state competition costs.
Recently, Chili's Restaurants in New Mexico announced a statewide collaboration effort to partner area Chili's locations with LETR agencies to raise more funds and awareness for Special Olympics. Agencies interested in hosting a Chili's Tip-A-Cop should contact LETR SONM Liaison Heather Scott at heatherscott@sonm.org to coordinate an event. Special thanks to all participating LETR officers and Chili's employees in Rio Rancho for their passion and dedication to supporting Special Olympics.
