Such a happy place to be.

Golf Classic - That's a wrap!  New!

There were many remarkable things about the 2013 Golf Classic that took place this past Monday - a sold-out tournament with 48 teams, the opportunity to play at one of the most picturesque golf courses in New Mexico, overcast skies and cool temperatures, and a 300 pound bear on hole 16! But most of all, it was remarkable to see so many people take time out of their busy lives to support SONM's athletes.

"This Golf Classic essentially boils down to this - every person playing is helping to bring the game of golf to over 200 Special Olympics athletes living in New Mexico," said SONM Executive Director Randy Mascorella. "When our athletes are welcomed onto golf courses and have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability, knowledge of the game, etiquette, and spirit of sportsmanship - perceptions are changed and our communities become healthier places to live."

Four teams emerged victorious and were awarded prizes for their skill on the course. The last place team, awarded the "Nice Try" prize -  with a score of 82 - was composed of Carlos Lopez, Craig Wood, Jared Ashcraft, and Greg Qualls. The 3rd place team - with a score of 61 -  was Team Mark's Casa composed of John Murphy, Rob Johnson, Tom Jensen, and Mark Wiggins. The 2nd place team - with a score of 60 -  was Team Conoco Phillips composed of Bryan Richard, Mark Poulson, Nathan Coats, and Vance Roberts. The 1st place team - with a score of 59 - was Team McDonalds composed of Jim Cantrall, Tim With, Greg With, and James Lee. We would also like to congratulate the winners of the closest to the pin contest: Chip Smith, Chris Rierson, Dave Johnson, Wes Rolan, Paige Diamond, and David Bernitsky.

Thank you to Century Link, the Presenting Sponsor of the Golf Classic, and all of the sponsors and supporters who made this tournament possible!  Click HERE to view photos from the event.
Nominate your athletes!

The 2014 USA Games are less than a year away and the deadline for athlete nominations is August 23rd. SONM will be accepting nominations for athletes in Aquatics, Athletics, Bocce and Bowling for the USA Games, which are in Princeton, New Jersey on June 14th-21st, 2014.

Qualifying Year for the USA Games is from 2012 Four Corners Invitational through 2013 Four Corners Invitational. All athletes that received a medal during the Qualifying Year are eligible to submit a nomination form.  The medal must have been earned in the sport the athlete is nominated.  Athletes can be nominated in multiple sports as long as they meet the qualifications.  Once all nomination forms are received, athletes will be selected through random draw in each sport.

Click HERE to find the athlete nomination form and return it to Chris Page at the SONM Office by August 23rd. For more information about the 2014 USA Games, click HERE.

Congratulations to the recently selected USA Games coaches Linda Charzuk (Bocce), Chris Castillo (Athletics), Carolyn Olson (Aquatics), and Allie Stapleton (Bowling).
Over the Edge! New!

By now, most of our readers know about SONM's most exhilarating fundraiser - Over the Edge! It's a 203-foot rappel down the New Mexico Bank and Trust Building in Downtown Albuquerque for the benefit of Special Olympics New Mexico's athletes.

If the thrill of rappelling down a 16-story building isn't for you, then look into our Corporate Cliffhanger Challenge where businesses in the same industry create teams and compete against each other to raise the most money! Your company first needs to "buy in" and agree to match funds raised, then you and your co-workers can begin the fundraising process. You can even send your boss Over the Edge! First through third place awards will be given to the companies who raise the most funds. The first place winner of the Corporate Cliffhanger Challenge will receive banner placement with company logo at the Over the Edge venue and name in the SO Brief. Click HERE to learn more about the Challenge.

Click HERE to visit our Over the Edge webpage, where you can create a fundraising page and learn about sponsorship opportunities.
