Thoughts From Randy
aha. This week I drove to Santa Fe, sat in Mutual of Omaha's traveling van, and in front of a camera started with "My name is Randy, and this is my AHA MOMENT."
It happened years ago when I recruited twenty students from a mid-school special education class and twenty of their nondisabled peers to bowl together for four Sunday afternoons in a row. This was their first experience with Unified Sports. The first Sunday was quiet and uncomfortable. Although these students walked the same halls, ate in the same cafeteria, and attended the same school functions - they did not know how to be together. They didn't even know each others' names

On Saturday, June 1st, SONM will once again be teaming up with United Blood Services to offer the Special Olympics Blood Drive at the State Summer Games. The Blood Drive will take place from 8:30 am- 2:00 pm in the parking lot south of the UNM Track and Field Stadium. Find the hero in you and sign up to donate - up to three lives can be saved for every one donation, and your donation can potentially aid many of our athletes who experience medical issues. Get Healthy - Stay Healthy at the 2013 State Summer Games! New!
Attention all athletes and families! Make sure that you bring your athletes by the Healthy Athletes venues at Olympic Village. This year, Special Olympics New Mexico will be offering Healthy Athletes® screenings in the following areas: Opening Eyes (vision), Special Smiles (dentistry), Fit Feet (podiatry), FUNfitness (physical therapy), and blood pressure screenings by Blue Cross Blue Shield. All athletes who receive screenings at all five Healthy Athletes venues will be entered in a drawing for a digital camera! The health of our Special Olympics athletes has a strong influence not only on their ability to train and compete but also on their quality of life. We are encouraging all athletes to visit the Healthy Athletes venues, even if they have already been screened in the past, so that SONM can continue to provide these health services. For more information about Healthy Athletes at Summer Games, contact Victoria Gonzales at 505-856-0342. |

Spend in style for Special Olympics athletes!
Do you need a year's worth of ice cream from Creamland? How about a handmade canoe? Your answer is probably no, but why not bid on and buy some great items at SONM's 2013 Auction & Dinner to benefit your Special Olympics athletes. The event, presented by The Payroll Company, will he held at the beautiful Hotel Albuquerque on July 20th from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
Wine, dine, and spend some money you don't really have, on things you probably don't need, to give our Special Olympics athletes the opportunity to compete in the sports they love! To purchase tickets or to learn about sponsorship opportunities, contact Christine Sandoval at 505-856-0342.
