"The only unusual thing about my son's Special Olympics experience is that there is nothing unusual about it..."

Goin' Over in 2013? New!

SONM's most unique and exhilarating event of the year is quickly approaching this September and we want everyone to go Over the Edge for Special Olympics! Going "Over the Edge" is more than a rappel off the 16-story New Mexico Bank and Trust Building in downtown Albuquerque - it is a way to support Special Olympics New Mexico's 2,600 athletes with intellectual disabilities by providing them more opportunity for athletic competition.

There are many ways to participate in this fundraising event. You can raise funds individually and go Over the Edge yourself; you can participate in our CORPORATE CLIFFHANGER CHALLENGE and send your co-workers Over the Edge; you can sponsor a Special Olympics athlete to go Over the Edge; or you can come up with your own creative way to get involved. The goal is to raise as much as possible, but the minimum to participate is $1,000. Come be a part of this thrilling experience, all for the benefit of Special Olympics New Mexico's athletes.

If you would like to register and begin fundraising, click HERE to visit our Over the Edge Firstgiving page. If you would like to learn more about sponsorship opportunities or the Corporate Cliffhanger Challenge, contact Christine Sandoval at 505-856-0342.

Unified Flag Football Training brings out enthusiasm in coaches and Partners New!

On April 12th and 13th, Special Olympics New Mexico hosted our first-ever Flag Football Coaches Training. We welcomed Dave Breen, the Sports and Competition Director at Special Olympics Indiana and Flag Football Technical Delegate for Special Olympics North America, to lead the training school.

There was a great turnout for the training with 35 coaches and partners in attendance from 12 delegations. The training began on Friday evening with an in-depth rules seminar led by Dave Breen and a series of video examples illustrating the rules and regulations of the game. On Saturday, Dave led a rule interpretation and application exercise called "You Make the Call," where the coaches were shown a play and they then had to make the correct call. The morning concluded with a Unified Sports Seminar that illustrated the benefits of Unified Sports and how Flag Football will fit in that mold The training was capped off by hands-on playing of the game, where coaches, Partners, and a few athletes divided up into two teams, with coaches acting as officials, and played Flag Football scrimmage games for two hours.

The addition of Flag Football was made possible by the Kim Samuel Unified Sports Grant that provided funding for the coaches education course along with equipment for those delegations who will be bringing a team to competition. Flag Football will be offered at the SONM Four Corners Invitational in 2013 and will be moved to the fall in 2014 as a stand alone tournament.
Success all around - Onate High School Project UNIFY Event   New!
Team AUTISM AWARENESS

Last Friday, students, faculty, and staff from Onate High School (OHS) gathered on the school's softball field for anything but your ordinary Unified Softball game. Students from Advocates for Action, a student-run advocacy group at OHS worked on this event for six weeks and all of their effort made for an impressive Project UNIFY event.
The field was adorned with posters and signs with sayings like  "Pledge to Show Respect" and "Together We Can Make a Difference." As Team AUTISM AWARENESS and Team RESPECT took the field, you could sense the unity and respect between the athletes and Unified Partners.

Team RESPECT
The energy was high throughout the day and so was attendance. Over 250 Onate High School students showed their support for their classmates and the school's Project UNIFY initiative. The event also had a great deal of support from OHS's administration and Sal Wright, Adapted P.E. coach. The time put in
by the Advocates for Action students and the support they received culminated in a great day and a perfect way to promote acceptance and awareness.

One week left - Special Olympics at Safeway!

There is still one week left in the Safeway People with Disabilities Campaign. Visit your neighborhood Safeway store and make a donation before April 30th to support Special Olympics!

Funds raised will benefit Special Olympics, Easter Seals, and several other smaller disability organizations in local communities, which will allow us to provide greater services and programs for our 2,600 athletes and help us reach the other 19,000 children with intellectual disabilities in New Mexico to bring them into the Special Olympics family. Thanks to the support of Safeway shoppers, the national People with Disabilities Campaign has raised more than $9.3 million for Special Olympics since 2008.
