Thoughts From Randy
Safe

A couple of weeks ago Special Olympics New Mexico held its first Unified Team Bowling Tournament.  Seventy teams participated, and judging by the outcome, this will be a bigger tournament next year.  There was a lot to observe that day.

To start with, half of the bowlers on each team were Special Olympics athletes - the other half nondisabled athletes including friends, family, law enforcement torch run officers, classmates, etc.  The mix brought the kind of moments that we all love - the kind that only happen when people feel safe.

Flag Football Coaches Training School  New!

Coaches, athletes, and partners, be sure to mark your calendars for the Flag Football Training School on April 12th from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm and April 13th from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm! Flag Football is one of the most exciting sports Special Olympics has ever offered and each delegation is strongly encourage to send representatives to this training school, even if you are not sure you will be offering flag football this year. Since flag football is being offered as a Unified Sport only, your partners are also encouraged to attend.

Join us as Dave Breen from Special Olympics Indiana, who brings 20 years of experience in this sport, leads the training from start to finish. Dave is the Flag Football Technical Delegate for Special Olympics North America and for the USA National Games. The Friday evening session will focus on rules and interpretations. Saturday morning will being with a "you make the call" session where different scenarios are presented and you will apply the appropriate ruling.

Team Bonus: SONM will purchase all of the equipment needed to train and compete in flag football for any coaches who complete the Flag Football Training School.  This includes flags, balls, and team t-shirt uniforms. Delegations with multiple teams will be eligible to receive multiple sets of equipment.

If you have any questions or are interested in registering for the training school, please email your name and delegation to chrispage@sonm.org. Registration deadline is

Add "Support Special Olympics" to Your April Grocery Shopping List! New!

For the sixth consecutive year, Special Olympics New Mexico has been invited to be a beneficiary of an annual customer fundraising promotion with Safeway stores across New Mexico. Please visit your neighborhood Safeway store from March 29 - April 30, 2013 and make a donation at checkout to support the People with Disabilities campaign.

Funds raised will benefit Special Olympics, Easter Seals, and several other smaller disability organizations in local communities, which will allow us to provide greater services and programs for our 2,600 athletes and help us reach the other 19,000 children with intellectual disabilities in New Mexico to bring them into the Special Olympics family. Thanks to the support of Safeway shoppers, the national People with Disabilities campaign has raised more than $9.3 million for Special Olympics since 2008.
