Last Friday the US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights announced that school districts would now have a legal obligation to provide students with disabilities equal access to extracurricular athletic activities. Special Olympics will work to offer our assistance and our Unified Sports Program as an option to those schools looking for meaningful ways to make things happen. I don't want to dwell on the law, nor the possibilities right now, but I would like to focus on something that was said to me - "Just because athletic departments are opening a door doesn't mean anyone will be welcoming them in."

Sports season kicks off in February with Mayor's Invitational Indoor Track Meet and State Poly Hockey! New!
Mayor's Invitational Indoor Track Meet
Come out to the 2013 Mayor's Invitational Indoor Track Meet to see SONM athletes compete in various track and field events on one of our nation's premier indoor tracks - a banked Mondo track that has 60 meter straightaways running the entire length of the facility, as well as areas for shot put and long jump events.
The event will take place on Sunday, February 17th at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Team check-in and warmup begin at 9:00 am and competition will last until 2:30 pm. Registration deadline is February 7th. Thanks to our Presenting Sponsor Bank of Albuquerque and to UNM Football, and Albuquerque Parks and Recreation for partnering with us once again! SONM athletes, coaches, and volunteers are getting geared up for the first and one of the most action-packed team sports that SONM offers.
The State Poly Hockey Tournament will take place on February 22nd and 23rd at McGee Park in Farmington. Opening Ceremonies will occur on Friday evening after a day of divisioning rounds. The tournament will conclude on Saturday with the Victory Dance! Come out and see our SONM athletes as they hit the rink in full force! NMLETR Officers: Save the date for our 2013 LETR Kick Off on March 6th
On Wednesday, March 6th join many of your fellow Guardians of the Flame as we "kick off" our 2013 Law Enforcement Torch Run, which raises awareness and generates funds for Special Olympics.
The Kick Off will take place at Wells Fargo at 200 Lomas NW Albuquerque from 11:00am - 1:30pm.
Come elevate your passion from inspirational words by Special Olympics athletes and their family members, as well as comments from several dignitaries and community partners who support your Torch Run efforts.
Lunch will be served during a session in which new NMLETR frontline information and resources-available to better your 2013 Torch Run experience-will be shared.

Here comes the Bride...and her new email address! New!
As many of you may know, Jena, SONM Coaches Education Director, got married last weekend!!!! She is now officially Jena Waddell and her email address has changed to jenawaddell@sonm.org. Jena will be back in the office on February 6th. Congratulations to our newlyweds!
