Thoughts From Randy
Do You See

Christmas is near and although some may consider it "over-kill" - if you listen to the radio for longer than five minutes at a time, chances are you are likely to hear a Christmas carol. I for one love them all and never tire of their melody or their message.

In 1962 Noel Regney and Gloria Shayne wrote the lyrics and music to "Do You Hear What I Hear?" Bing Crosby recorded his own version a year later and made it one of America's favorites. Every time I hear this song I picture the words vividly in my mind - "Said the night wind to the little lamb - "Do you see what I see?"

Daniels Fund grant provides new opportunities for Special Olympics New Mexico athletes New!

Special Olympics New Mexico is excited to announce that it has received a $30,000 Daniels Fund grant to support the ongoing work of Special Olympics sports program throughout the state. The grant will enable Special Olympics to better serve its athletes by expanding current programs, offering more competition opportunities, expanding its Unified Sports Program, and increasing youth participation, state-wide.

"Special Olympics New Mexico has spent the last twenty years building partnerships that create new possibilities in over 108 communities in our state.  Bill Daniels had a healthy respect for the transformative power of sport in a person's life," said SONM Executive Director Randy Mascorella. "He embraced the life-lessons and character development that training and competition provides. I think Mr. Daniels would be proud to see what this grant is going to accomplish in the lives of our Special Olympics athletes and all those who will walk onto our playing fields with them."

Bill Daniels, a pioneer in cable television known for his kindness and generosity to those in need, established the Daniels Fund to provide grants and scholarships in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.  For more information, please visit
Very merry year at SONM's Posole Ole Fun Walk!  New!

This year's Posole Ole Fun Walk was unlike any year before it. With more food, more music, more space, and more activities, athletes and fans alike had a great time at the event, celebrating the most money ever raised - $34,000!

The fist place fundraising team was the Rio Rancho Rockets, who will be enjoying a bowling party at Starlight Lanes! AGS took second place and Church of the Risen Savior took a close third place.

Karen Fleetwood was the top individual fundraiser. She and 20 of her closest friends were treated to a suite at the Lobo Women's Basketball game and a pregame meal at Frontier restaurant! Jerry Berger was the second place individual fundraiser with Linda Charzuk following in third place.
Our gratitude to all!

This year attendees also had the opportunity to decorate a holiday ornament at the new Posole Ole craft area. The ornaments were used to adorn four holiday trees that were auctioned off at the 2012 Golf Classic Auction dinner. Thanks to the athletes, families, fans, and volunteers who donated supplies and decorated ornaments.

A heartfelt thanks to volunteers from Church of the Risen Savior and Ameriplex Mortgage, orchestra members from Sandia High School, and of course our event sponsors!

LETR State Director gearing up for World Games Final Leg in Korea

It's one of the largest stages where athletes with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to shine their brightest. It's provided by one of the largest movements aimed at developing an ever-growing environment of acceptance, inclusion, and dignity. It's the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Korea, from January 26 to February 6, 2013.

Preceding Special Olympics' traditional World Games Opening Ceremonies, New Mexico's own LETR State Director Michelle Ugalde of the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office, will join a team of law enforcement officers to participate in the Final Leg-a 12 day journey to heighten awareness and take the powerful messages of inclusion, acceptance, and ability inspired by Special Olympics athletes to every corner of Korea, while promoting the 2013 Winter World Games.

While in Korea, State Director Ugalde will also participate in a Polar Plunge -a fundraiser that culminates in a ceremonial dunking in freezing waters. Proceeds will benefit both Special Olympics New Mexico and help send ten Special Olympics athletes from around the world to Korea, who were also chosen to be a part of the Final Leg team.

SONM celebrates our Family Tree and Friendship Tree this holiday season!  New!

The story behind our Family Tree is an inspiration to all of us, especially during a time when family is of the utmost importance. In 1998, retired Major General Francis Nye, father of Special Olympics athlete Cynthia Nye, helped to create the Family Tree, SONM's endowment fund. Nye also served as the endowment's lead donor by purchasing the tree in honor of his daughter Cynthia. The Family Tree is proudly displayed at the SONM chapter office. Since its inception, it has grown to over $60,000.

The Family Tree serves as a medium for SONM athlete family members to ensure a sustainable foundation athletes to come. The amount of each gift is distinguished by a gold, silver, or bronze leaf and can be purchased with an investment as low as $250.  These gifts are then pooled together to build an endowment that has the strength of a large financial investment, while maintaining the donor's individuality, as they honor a family member, friend, or loved one.

In 2004, SONM created the "Friendship Tree," which extends the same opportunity to our SONM friends. With a gift of $250 (Giver of Courage), $500 (Giver of Joy), $1,000 (Giver of Hope) or $2,500 (Giver of Life) friends and family can join the ranks of those who have contributed.
