New Expedited Social Security Disability Process for Veterans
|
The Social Security Administration has unveiled a new initiative to expedite Social Security disability claims by veterans with a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability compensation rating of 100% Permanent & Total (P&T). Under the new process, Social Security will treat these veterans' applications as high priority and will issue expedited decisions similar to the way the agency currently handles disability claims from Wounded Warriors.
The VA rating only expedites Social Security Disability claims processing and does not guarantee an approval of Social Security disability benefits. These veterans must still meet the strict eligibility requirements for a disability allowance.
Social Security plans to launch the expedited process in mid-March.
For information about this service, please visit www.socialsecurity.gov/pgm/disability-pt.htm.

Social Security Publishes New SSI Rules for Same-Sex Married Couples
|
The Social Security Administration has published new instructions that allow Social Security field offices to process some Supplemental Security Income (SSI) claims by individuals who are in a same-sex marriage.
These instructions come in response to last year's Supreme Court decision in U.S. v. Windsor which found Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.
SSI is a program based on disability and financial need, and Social Security must consider the income and resources of the recipient and his or her spouse when determining eligibility and monthly payment.
If you feel that you may be entitled to or eligible for benefits, you are encouraged to apply now.
