Converse Opera Theatre presents "Hansel and Gretel"

Friday - Sunday, Nov. 16 - 18

David Reid Theatre of Chapman Cultural Center.

Admission is $20 for adults and $5 for students (with ID) and children.

One of the original 80 Grimm's published fairy tales, "Hansel and Gretel" is a story appropriate
for both children and adults. The opera's libretto was put together by the composer's sister and
is more fun and magic and somewhat less frightening than the original fairy tale. The entire
story is told through the music of Engelbert Humperdinck, a composer who worked with
Richard Wagner in the 19th century, and not related to the popular singer some of the audience may remember.

A poor boom-maker and his wife live on the edge of a dense forest that has always been rumored to be haunted. They live far from their nearest neighbor with Hansel and Gretel, the father's children who he had when he married his present wife. Father has gone into town selling the brooms that his son Hansel helps make while Mother is running other errands that are not made clear. The children are left alone in the house to do their chores.

The work is tiresome and after a while the children begin playing. Mother returns and catches them playing. She is extremely angry and an incident occurs that leaves them without anything for supper so they are sent into the forest to pick strawberries. The children lose track of time as Night falls in the forest; they remember to say their bedtime prayer just before they fall asleep.

We see that they are being "watched over" during the night and know they are safe. Morning comes and upon awakening they discover a most beautiful house built of tasty treats emanating appetizing smells. They are just beginning to enjoy a "taste" when they encounter the home's occupant, a wicked witch who just happens to like to trap children for her supper! But the Witch

is not prepared for the resourcefulness of the children and...

the tables will be turned in the most elegant manner!

We proudly announce ......

Students in the eighth grade at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School recently competed
at Clemson University in the Foreign Language Declamation.

Students at our school study Spanish under the direction of Sra. Melissa Drummond.
She teaches Spanish classes in Spanish for students in grades K-4 through 8th grade.
She also teaches a core curriculumclass (math/science) for al students in
1st and 2nd grades in Spanish.

At Clemson University, Rebecca Funderburk earned a first place medal in the category for students who have some outside experience in the language.  Sara Slaughter earned a second place medal in the category for students who have no outside experience in the language.

The winning of these medals takes on an even more
appreciative response when you consider that these students are the youngest students
