St. James, Hendersonville Hosts Sesquicentennial Events
Consecrated as an Episcopal church in the midst of the Civil War, St. James, Hendersonville is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. Sesquicentennial programs will include a May 5 presentation by Tom Orr, local historian, dramatist and Time-News columnist. He will speak from his perspective of St. James in the community. On May 12, St. James parishioners Charles Medd and Frank Ballard will discuss the church's history, including some mysteries and surprises. Active in the parish since 1950, Medd is the church archivist and chairs the sesquicentennial planning committee. Ballard is helping update the parish history. Both programs are in St. James' Stillwell Hall at 10 a.m., between the 9:00 and 11:15 worship services. All are welcome to attend.

Good Shepherd Participates in Strive to Revive Cardiac Arrest Rescue Program
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC), the North Carolina Council of Churches, the American Red Cross and Rep. Becky Carney have selected GOOD SHEPHERD EPISCOPAL CHURCH as one of 150 places of worship across the state to participate in Strive to Revive. The program aims to reduce deaths related to cardiovascular disease by providing automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) and CPR training to places of worship across North Carolina.
"Our congregation is committed to protecting the health of our members, and Strive to Revive helps us take this commitment to the next level," said Father Walter Bryan. "With many people attending our church each week, we have the potential to save lives spiritually and physically as we make a real difference in our community."

HOLY LAND PIGRIMAGE--ST. PHILIP'S, BREVARD
St. Philip's is coordinating a pilgrimage to the Holy Land the last two weeks in February 2014. Led by Dr. Tom Lewis, a retired Presbyterian minister, the goal of the trip is for participants to have a tangible experience of the biblical landscape and the spirituality of the Holy Land. Unlike a regular tour, the pilgrimage is an experience requiring involvement and an active roll in the day-to-day activities. These will include Morning Prayer, excursions, small group discussions, rest/reflection, meals, and will conclude with worship. It is open to all interested parties and will be limited to twenty adults. The group will fly to Tel Aviv and spend seven nights at the Sea of Galilee, followed by seven nights in Jerusalem. Accommodations will be at very comfortable hotels. All breakfasts and most lunches/dinners will be included. It is hoped to keep the cost at approximately $4,500 per person, including airfare. An advance deposit will be required. In addition to his congregational ministry, Dr. Lewis has served as Director of Spirituality at Columbia Theological Seminary. He is the author of the book, Finding God. In the last four years he has led five pilgrimages to the Holy Land. Questions may be directed to June Hough or Billie Begg. |

Voice for the Palestinians Ministry
I would like to start a Voice For the Palestinians ministry in the Diocese of WNC. I know there are lots of people interested in this issue, but I think we are scattered and find ourselves trying to do things on our own. We might be more effective if we act as a group putting together programs to use in churches throughout the diocese.
If you are the lone voice crying out in the wilderness in your church and would like to do more to help the Palestinian people, please let me know.
