Weekly Reflection
Saturday at the Cathedral of All Souls I will have the honor of ordaining Grant Stokes and Elizabeth Tester to the Sacred Order of Deacons. I will ask the Holy Spirit to fill them with grace and power so that through them many "may come to know and love" the Lord and that they might be instruments for God's work of making the crooked ways straight. Ordinations are days of clarity, dedication, and transformation. The candidates dedicate their lives to the particular calling of the order and, through the Holy Spirit, God empowers them to fulfill their promises.
Let us remember that in our baptism we are all ordained to be ministers of Jesus Christ and to be instruments of his grace and love. In our baptism we promised to "strive for justice and peace among all people...to persevere in resisting evil...seek and serve Christ in all persons" and so on. We promised to dedicate our lives to helping "God's will be done on earth as in heaven."
Advent is the season we remember our calling. It's a time for us to let go of our customary patterns so that we might rediscover where God sends us to serve God in this world. It's the season when we ask how we are to carry out those baptismal promises. That asking requires that we pay attention to both the pain and the hopes of the world. For God's reign to break in, what needs to be born here and how is God calling for us to respond?
I have changed my mind about all the consumer frenzy around us. I used to say all the shopping and the decorations weren't holy, but I realized, "Who am I to make that judgment?" In some paradoxical way, the frenzy makes the hurts and hopes of the world easier to see.
Everyone wants a "Happy Holiday," and all Christians want a "Merry Christmas." Our task is to see who in our communities simply does not have the means to make that happen. Then we are to ask, "Why is that? What can we do so that the world of 2013 will be more just?" These are Advent questions. God is calling us out of the comfort of Nazareth into the wilderness of following the divine calling so that God's reign will be born.
May we all embrace our baptismal ordination and follow that call.

December 12 is the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe. It commemorates the appearance of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego in Mexico. The sign the Virgin gave to Juan Diego to convince the Bishop of the authenticity of his vision was a full bloom of Castilian roses found in a field the middle of the winter. Let us celebrate this feast day by looking for the holy right where we are.

What Freed for Ministry means to Camp Henry
Thanks to the generous contributions of individuals and parishes, Freed for Ministry is at 97 percent of goal! We are so close to freeing the Diocese from debt and focusing our resources on the ministries that are important to us all.
What kind of work will we focus on when we are free of debt? Here's what Camp Henry director Ian Williams has to say:
Camp Henry is a very important and vibrant ministry of the Diocese of Western North Carolina. Camp Henry welcomes persons of all races, colors, and denominations to experience God's love and Christian fellowship. Each summer, nearly 500 children and youth come to Lake Logan to play games, sing songs, dance dances, hike, be creative, be silly, make friends, swim, boat, and most importantly learn about God and how his son Jesus Christ's acts and teachings apply to their lives. It is a core mission of Camp Henry's to provide this experience to any child no matter the situation. This includes children who would normally be unable to pay the cost of camp, either in full or in part.
Camp Henry is blessed to be able to provide over half of its participants with a full or partial scholarship. We are extremely thankful to the diocese, individual churches, foundations, and individual donors who help us make this happen. The additional money available due to the Freed For Ministry Campaign will alleviate the significant financial shortfall Camp Henry experiences each year due to program costs and the great number of scholarship grants awarded.
The additional funding will also allow Camp Henry to target an even greater number of under-served children and youth to provide a safe, meaningful, and spiritually uplifting program. As a scholarship recipient during my childhood, I can personally attest to the importance of Camp Henry and the foundation it provided for my faith and life in general.
On behalf of Camp Henry and past/present/future recipients of scholarships, I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, all the donors, churches, and people involved with the Freed For Ministry Campaign. Your hard work, donations, prayers, compassion, and love will most certainly have a profound effect on the lives of many children and youth.
All donations made by December 31 will be recognized in the Diocesan magazine (published in January).
Together we can reach our goal!

Imputed Income Figures
The 2012 Imputed Income figures from CPG are in. Numbers will be mailed out this week directly to those affected. This relates to life insurance provided by CPG and is in addition to any insurance provided by a parish. You must evaluate insurance provided by your parish separately.
What is imputed income and how should it be reported for active clergy?
Section 79 of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) requires that employers calculate imputed income for employees who receive group term life insurance coverage in excess of $50,000. Active clergy who qualify for group term life insurance coverage in excess of $50,000 are required to pay taxes on the value of that insurance coverage in excess of $50,000 and, the employer is required to report this imputed income on the cleric's Form W-2 each year.
The value of group term life insurance provided by one or more employers is considered taxable income in the current year to the extent the insurance coverage exceeds $50,000. The Church Pension Fund provides group term life insurance coverage for all eligible clergy active in the Clergy Pension Plan. That coverage is based on four times Total Compensation (as reported to the Church Pension Fund) up to a maximum of $100,000, rounded to the nearest $500. Retired clergy group term life insurance coverage is based on four times HAC (Highest Average Compensation as determined by the Church Pension Fund) up to a maximum of $50,000, rounded to the nearest $500.
Active lay employees under the age of 72 participating in the Episcopal Church Lay Employee' Defined Benefit Retirement Plan are provided coverage up to $50,000 (two times salary with a maximum of $50,000, rounded to the nearest $500). Active clergy and retired clergy, who receive additional group term life insurance from a diocese, church, or other employer, may have an additional income tax liability each year. Contrary to popular belief, this tax liability is not based on the actual cost of the group term life insurance. The Internal Revenue Code ("IRC") includes a table that must be used to determine the value of this benefit.
The imputed income figure should be added to Wages in Box 1 of the W-2 and included in Box 12a with a Code of "C".

Cathedral of All Souls to host Las Posadas
On Friday evening, December 21, at 6pm, the Cathedral of All Souls will host Las Posadas in the church. Our guests will be members of our sister church, La Capilla de Santa María (Hendersonville), and the Latino community. We invite you to participate in this event.
If you are not familiar with the tradition of Las Posadas, on each of the nine days before Christmas, a procession of children and their families reenacts Mary and Joseph's search for a place to stay in Bethlehem.
When they come to a house, the children and the people of the house sing the song of the peregrinos (pilgrims). They may be rejected at first, but always they are eventually recognized and welcomed in. In the place, home or parish, where it has been prearranged to hold that night's posada party, the pilgrims enter and everyone may spend some time together singing Christmas songs and praying. Finally, there is a party with a piñata full of treats for the children.
If you can help out with food, please reply directly to The Rev. Thomas Murphy at 828-772-4342, or Donna Long at 828-670-8549. |

Audit Update
Thank you to those parishes that have submitted their 2011 audits to the diocese. Many others have let us know that your audits are in process or planned, so thanks to you also. For those of you that have not completed your audit and don't have it yet planned, please start to plan it now.
According to the canons of the church, audits should be completed by September 1 each year for the previous year. Fiscal Ministries met yesterday and brainstormed on ways to help those parishes needing assistance in completing audits.
Please contact Sue Schwein at the diocese if your parish needs assistance in completing the audit.

ECF's Fellowship Partners Program Application Process is Open!
For nearly 50 years, the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) has named and supported emerging scholars and ministry leaders throughout the Episcopal Church. ECF believes that by supporting individuals at an early stage in their ministries, transformational scholars and ministry leaders can make a lasting impact on the wider Church.
ECF is pleased to announce that the application process for the 2013 Fellowships is now open.
The application requires a significant commitment of time and effort and is due on March 15, 2013. The selection process for an ECF Fellowship is highly competitive and a strong application requires a significant investment of time and effort. We encourage all applicants to begin this process early.
The Fellowship Partners Program is one of the most exciting ways that ECF supports innovative scholars and ministry leaders throughout the Episcopal Church. Click here to read about recent Fellows and be sure to check out the most recent edition of Fellows News. |
Thoughts from a Deacon During Advent
By the Rev. Deacon Clare Barry
No matter what time of year -- Advent, Easter or Ordinary time -- a Deacon's primary work is to bring the needs of the world into the Church and to goad the Church into responding. God calls each deacon to a specific ministry. My calling involves caring for the world's poor and suffering, an insurmountable task.
I did not seek this calling. In fact, it had its origins in my childhood, while growing up in Washington, D.C. and witnessing the desperate poverty a few miles away in the slums. The global part also originated in Washington, as I grew up listening to a career diplomat discuss the global population explosion in the early 1960s over dinner conversations between his wife and my best friend. There were others who influenced my calling to care for the world's poor and suffering. They lived nearby and provided me with a constant education during my formative years.

Camp Henry Needs You!
Camp Henry is looking for Chaplains to help spread God's word to children and youth in the summer of 2013. Camp Henry is a very important ministry that our diocese provides to the children and youth of our area and beyond. Camp Henry also helps provide a foundation of faith that lasts a lifetime for many of its participants.
If you are interested in serving as a chaplain for the summer of 2013 or at some point in the future please contact Ian Williams, the Director of Camp Henry either by phone at (828) 646-0272 or by email at camphenry@lakelogan.org.
We are able to provide a full scholarship to the child of your choice to the session of their choice or we can pay a small stipend in return for giving us a bit of your time and talents. Thank you and I hope this quick message finds you well.
Also, we are looking for Nurses and/or Doctors who are currently certified in North Carolina to serve for a week at camp as our Health Services Provider.
Each week we have 50-80 children and youth who spend their time running, swimming, dancing, singing, etc. They have a trans-formative, uplifting, and fun time and you can help make their experience as safe and great as possible.
The Health Services Provider administers medications, cleans up scrapes and bruises, and advises staff and parents on more involved medical situations (we do as much as possible to avoid such cases, but its camp, they are kids, and things do happen although very infrequently).
This is a chance to spend a week in a beautiful place and help them experience fellowship and fun in a safe place. Nurses and/or Doctors who give us their time and training will be compensated by giving a week of camp to the camper and session of their choice.
If you are interested in this opportunity or know someone who is, please contact Camp Henry by phone at (828) 646-0272 or by email at camphenry@lakelogan.org. |
Advent Evening with the Bishop
Please join us at St. George's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, December 12th, at 6pm for an Advent evening with Bishop Porter Taylor. We will share a simple supper, and then Bishop Taylor will offer a talk, "How do we wait? Who are we waiting for?"
Advent is when we learn to wait, which is always hard for us. We live in an age of instant gratification. We push a button and something happens. We arm ourselves with our time saving gadgets to give us the illusion of control.
Advent begins when we stop thinking about what we can do and focus on waiting to see what God is already doing and has promised to do. In Advent we realize how little we can change and instead rely completely on God to bring God's Kingdom near.
Bishop Taylor will explore how to wait in a culture of distraction and frenetic activity. He will also lead a discussion to aid in reclaiming the Christian virtue of hope -- of remembering we are not waiting for anything under the Christmas tree but we wait for the Savior of the world who will bring God's reign of justice and peace and mercy near. As we sing, O Come O Come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.
The talk will be followed by 15-20 minutes of Q/A, reflection, and discussion. The program is free, with a suggested donation for dinner. Please email Cynthia at csbassett@hotmail.com or leave a message at 828-423-3450 with number of people attending and any dietary restrictions.
Sponsored by the Center for Spiritual Resources, a joint initiative of the Cathedral of All Souls and the Diocese of WNC.

Church Leadership Conference at Kanuga
GOD IS UP TO SOMETHING: WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?
January 11, 2013 - January 13, 2013 "I believe God is up to something in and among the ordinary people of our neighborhoods and communities and in our local churches. [This is] about a movement of the spirit and how we, biblically, might join with what God is up to out there, ahead of us, in our communities."
--Alan Roxburgh Congregations are in the midst of huge changes these days. Significant shifts in the culture are challenging many of our taken-for-granted ways of doing church. This leadership conference will look at what these changes mean for parish leadership (both clergy and lay teams) and provide practical ways in which they can learn to thrive as they engage with their communities to fulfill the mission of God. Alan Roxburgh will give five presentations during the weekend: 1. Where We Find Ourselves Today 2. What We Need to Know About Leading Change in Church 3. How to Invite Your People on a Journey Into Mission Across Their Neighborhoods and Communities 4. Developing the Leadership Skills and Processes You Will Need 5. Q&A with conference participants

Diocese Supports Sandy Relief Efforts
Thanks to the generosity of Episcopalians from around the country, Episcopal Relief & Development is in the process of making emergency grants to impacted dioceses in support of parish-based relief activities following Superstorm Sandy. In the US, these funds will help congregations expand feeding ministries and facilitate the provision of shelter and transportation assistance for those in need. In the Caribbean, Episcopal Relief & Development support is helping to secure food, water and building materials for distribution in critically impacted areas.
At the 91st Annual Diocesan Convention, we collected donations to support this effort. Donations totaling $1,959.70 were sent directly to ERD for Sandy relief.
Now, ERD has announced that a group of generous donors have agreed to match all gifts made to Episcopal Relief & Development by December 31, up to a total of $300,000! Every dollar you give will be matched to the Global Needs Fund, providing compassionate response to human suffering through all our many program areas.
Your tax-deductible gift of $50 becomes $100, providing life-saving disaster relief including food, blankets and medicine to those needing it most.
Check it out -- a new video from the Office of Communication chronicling relief efforts from Superstorm Sandy. http://www.episcopalchurch.org/page/multimedia.

Episcopal Church partners with FaithStreet, a new congregational evangelism tool
A partnership between the Episcopal Church and FaithStreet paves the way for congregations to connect their church with church seekers through an innovative church locator that offers much more than a search engine.
"Our partnership with FaithStreet will give our congregations a new tool to promote their churches," commented Anne Rudig, Episcopal Church Director of Communication. "FaithStreet not only locates a church, but works with a congregation to present the mission and ministry done there in ways easily understood by a seeker. It goes beyond address and contact info to providing an ethos or 'vibe' of particular churches."
FaithStreet, based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, currently showcases 3,580 churches in all 50 United States, in over 1,500 cities. This includes over 100 church networks and denominations representing churches of all sizes, ranging from five to 10,000 members.
"Churches will always be able to create a free profile on FaithStreet," noted Sean Coughlin, Chief Executive Officer. "In the future, FaithStreet will offer paid features, services, and advertising plans. These paid services will be always being optional, affordable and effective."

Sabbatical Policy
At its October 4, 2012 meeting, the Executive Council (after much discussion) adopted a new Sabbatical Policy. The new policy will apply prospectively. Salient features include:
- Encouragement to plan for sabbaticals and a phased-in sabbatical term
- Clarity that the sabbatical is for the benefit of both the parish and the clergy
- Prohibition of "terminal sabbaticals" (when a priest does not plan to return to the parish), but with a pastoral exception
- Provisions for saving for sabbaticals and clarity about how those funds are to be spent
- A description of a process for the parish and clergy to plan for the sabbatical and for sharing insights afterward
- A suggested funding source, and
- The possibility that a parish will not offer a sabbatical, as long as that is communicated to applicants early in the process and is in the Letter of Agreement.

Original Compositions Available to Music Directors
Karl Doege of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Boone, NC recently composed some original music that he would like to offer to others.
Karl writes, "I am not a trained musician. Yet I have a compelling interest in music. I sing in our choir and play (not professionally) a number of instruments. My church recently held what we called 'Vesper Services' during the summer of 2012. It was a series of evening services with some music, a reading and a period of silence. I accepted the responsibility for providing a Prelude for each service.
"I composed the music by reading through the texts for each service as provided in the Daily Office Lectionary. For the most part, I found that the Psalm selection served my purpose best. So, meditating on the Psalm, I tried to let the text speak to me musically. Most of the preludes are therefore contemplative in nature and lend themselves well to preparation for a time of thoughtful reflection and silence."
For more information, contact Karl Doege.
