ReflectionWeekly Reflection

Bishop Taylor Black & White

Thanks to Wikipedia, I learned that there are two explanations of why we call the shopping frenzy that occurs the day after Thanksgiving "Black Friday."

One is that it's the day stores actually get in the black by turning a profit. The other sounds more true to me. It's because people go crazy in their consumer mode. We read reports of shoving and fighting and even shooting from the fear that someone might get ahead of us to buy the product we want. It's a black day for human behavior.

Here's the good news. Annie Dillard, the wonderful writer, says, "If you want to see the stars, you must learn to walk in the dark." Black Friday and all the craziness of the holiday frenzy make the one true light, the morning star, shine even brighter for those who are willing to step outside the glitter and lift their gaze.

Advent is the season when the Church is most counter-cultural. (Let me confess here:  I am not Amish. I am all over Christmas Cards and crèches and even like one Elvis Christmas Carol. It's just the frenetic energy to manufacture a perfect event I don't like.)  Christmas is the most stressful holiday for many, perhaps because of our expectations of what the holiday should be. Instead, we are to stop trying to create an experience and open ourselves up to dare to look for what God is doing and has promised to do.

I suggest we multitask. Plan your holiday. Do what you need to do to feel as if you are festive and not Grinchy. Definitely continue family traditions. In our family there are ornaments from our childhoods, and there is a Santa that has to be on the mantel or Christmas isn't happening.

But then lift your gaze and allow yourself to ask God for your deepest hopes for this broken world. Let's remember, we are not waiting for Santa; we are waiting for the Savior of the world. We are not waiting for anything that goes under the tree; we are waiting for God's reign of peace and justice and mercy. We are not thinking about things; we are hoping for transformation.

The last words of the Bible are "Come, Lord Jesus." This is our Advent prayer. Let us pray for and plead for Him to come to us and, because we do not know the way to Him, let us wait.  Decorate your house.  Then go look for the stars by entering the dark.

Advent Evening with the Bishop

Please join us at St. George's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, December 12th, at 6pm for an Advent evening with Bishop Porter Taylor. We will share a simple supper, and then Bishop Taylor will offer a talk, "How do we wait? Who are we waiting for?"

Advent is when we learn to wait, which is always hard for us. We live in an age of instant gratification. We push a button and something happens. We arm ourselves with our time saving gadgets to give us the illusion of control.

Advent begins when we stop thinking about what we can do and focus on waiting to see what God is already doing and has promised to do. In Advent we realize how little we can change and instead rely completely on God to bring God's Kingdom near.

Bishop Taylor will explore how to wait in a culture of distraction and frenetic activity. He will also lead a discussion to aid in reclaiming the Christian virtue of hope -- of remembering we are not waiting for anything under the Christmas tree but we wait for the Savior of the world who will bring God's reign of justice and peace and mercy near. As we sing, O Come O Come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.

The talk will be followed by 15-20 minutes of Q/A, reflection, and discussion. The program is free, with a suggested donation for dinner. Please email Cynthia at csbassett@hotmail.com or leave a message at 828-423-3450 with number of people attending and any dietary restrictions.

Whisenhunt Receives the 2012 Dubose Award for Service

The Sewanee School of Theology bestowed upon The Rev. William A. Whisenhunt the 2012 DuBose Award for Service.

Whisenhunt received his Master of Divinity degree from The School of Theology in 1985. The Rt. Rev. J. Neil Alexander, dean of The School of Theology at the University of the South, presented the award to Whisenhunt as part of the DuBose Lectures and Alumni/ae Gathering on Nov. 1, 2012.

Whisenhunt has had a distinguished ministry in the Diocese of Western North Carolina and in the Episcopal Church since his ordination in 1985. He served at Epiphany in Newton, N.C., before being called to serve as the first canon missioner and canon to the ordinary of the diocese. During this time he spearheaded a major reorganization of diocesan structures. He was also instrumental in updating and rewriting policies and procedures for the diocese and developing the first diocesan website for western North Carolina. In the eight years that he served as canon to the ordinary, he became active in national deployment issues and was chair for two years of a deployment committee that worked closely with 35 other dioceses.

Diocese Awards Grant to Fresco Churches

The Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina approved a grant proposal to fund projects relating to repairing and preserving the frescoes in two small churches in Ashe County.

The historic St. Mary's Episcopal Church in West Jefferson and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs contain fresco paintings produced by Ben Long in the 1970s. The two churches once served separate rural communities, but today they are comprised of a single congregation under the spiritual guidance of the Reverend Stephen Miller. Collectively they are known as the Parish of the Holy Communion.

The Ashe County Frescoes Foundation requested funds to "reduce or alleviate stresses that weigh upon the frescoes."

For more about the frescoes and the foundation, click here.

Diocese Supports Sandy Relief Efforts

Thanks to the generosity of Episcopalians from around the country, Episcopal Relief & Development is in the process of making emergency grants to impacted dioceses in support of parish-based relief activities following Superstorm Sandy. In the US, these funds will help congregations expand feeding ministries and facilitate the provision of shelter and transportation assistance for those in need. In the Caribbean, Episcopal Relief & Development support is helping to secure food, water and building materials for distribution in critically impacted areas.

At the 91st Annual Diocesan Convention, we collected donations to support this effort. Donations totaling $1,959.70 were sent directly to ERD for Sandy relief.

Now, ERD has announced that a group of generous donors have agreed to match all gifts made to Episcopal Relief & Development by December 31, up to a total of $300,000!  Every dollar you give will be matched to the Global Needs Fund, providing compassionate response to human suffering through all our many program areas.

Your tax-deductible gift of $50 becomes $100, providing life-saving disaster relief including food, blankets and medicine to those needing it most.

Episcopal Church partners with FaithStreet, a new congregational evangelism tool

A partnership between the Episcopal Church and FaithStreet paves the way for congregations to connect their church with church seekers through an innovative church locator that offers much more than a search engine.

"Our partnership with FaithStreet will give our congregations a new tool to promote their churches," commented Anne Rudig, Episcopal Church Director of Communication.  "FaithStreet not only locates a church, but works with a congregation to present the mission and ministry done there in ways easily understood by a seeker. It goes beyond address and contact info to providing an ethos or 'vibe' of particular churches."

FaithStreet, based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, currently showcases 3,580 churches in all 50 United States, in over 1,500 cities. This includes over 100 church networks and denominations representing churches of all sizes, ranging from five to 10,000 members.

"Churches will always be able to create a free profile on FaithStreet," noted Sean Coughlin, Chief Executive Officer. "In the future, FaithStreet will offer paid features, services, and advertising plans. These paid services will be always being optional, affordable and effective."

New Episcopal Church Resources Focus on Older Adults, Faith Formation

Two new Lifelong Christian Formation resources focusing on older adults and faith formation in the Black context are now available for congregational use, in adult forums, study groups, educational seminars, and discussion gatherings.

"Aging is Changing" and  "Stories of Transformation: Worship, Witness & Work in the Black Community" are available at no cost on the Episcopal Church website.

"Aging is Changing" is a five -part program designed to be incorporated into the life of congregations. Prepared by the Episcopal Church Office for Lifelong Christian Formation and the Executive Council Taskforce on Older Adult Ministries, "Aging is Changing" was developed to help clergy and lay leaders identify issues of older adults, their families, and caregivers, and to identify existing local, state and national resources that might be helpful. It also includes best practices from 60 congregations around the Episcopal Church.

For more information contact rcollins@episcopalchurch.org.

"Stories of Transformation: Worship, Witness & Work in the Black Community" -- This important offering is a series of stories shared from the personal experience of the writers - a seminarian, theologians, parish priests, activists - and is a direct response to the conversation among the young people about the place and role of storytelling in the family.

Prepared by the Episcopal Church Office for Lifelong Christian Formation and the Office of Black Ministries, Stories of Transformation is recommended for congregational use by clergy and lay leaders who want to approach faith formation work in the context of the black community, providing readers the opportunity to go deeper into the stories of the black community.

Bishop's Visitation Schedule for 2013

The Bishop's 2013 visitation schedule is now updated on our website.

Sabbatical Policy

At its October 4, 2012 meeting, the Executive Council (after much discussion) adopted a new Sabbatical Policy. The new policy will apply prospectively. Salient features include:
  • Encouragement to plan for sabbaticals and a phased-in sabbatical term
  • Clarity that the sabbatical is for the benefit of both the parish and the clergy
  • Prohibition of "terminal sabbaticals" (when a priest does not plan to return to the parish), but with a pastoral exception
  • Provisions for saving for sabbaticals and clarity about how those funds are to be spent
  • A description of a process for the parish and clergy to plan for the sabbatical and for sharing insights afterward
  • A suggested funding source, and
  • The possibility that a parish will not offer a sabbatical, as long as that is communicated to applicants early in the process and is in the Letter of Agreement.

Click here for the updated policy.

Original Compositions Available to Music Directors

Karl Doege of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Boone, NC recently composed some original music that he would like to offer to others.

Karl writes, "I am not a trained musician. Yet I have a compelling interest in music. I sing in our choir and play (not professionally) a number of instruments. My church recently held what we called 'Vesper Services' during the summer of 2012. It was a series of evening services with some music, a reading and a period of silence. I accepted the responsibility for providing a Prelude for each service.

"I composed the music by reading through the texts for each service as provided in the Daily Office Lectionary. For the most part, I found that the Psalm selection served my purpose best. So, meditating on the Psalm, I tried to let the text speak to me musically. Most of the preludes are therefore contemplative in nature and lend themselves well to preparation for a time of thoughtful reflection and silence."

For more information, contact Karl Doege.
