Weatherproofing Your Home -
Windows & Doors
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, if you add up the total size of all the small cracks and gaps in the average American home, it's equivalent to the size of this open window.
Preparing your home for winter by sealing the cracks and gaps in your home's exterior is one of the best things you can do to save money on utility bills throughout the year. It will also make your home more comfortable for you and your family. While there are many facets to making your home more energy efficient, the best place to start is by carefully examining your home's exterior to seek out and fill all the areas where cold air is getting in, including around windows, doors and other places where pipes or exhaust ducts penetrate your home.
To watch a video that takes you through where to look for spots where air might be getting in your home, and how to properly seal those gaps, click here. And stop by Ward Lumber for everything you needs to weatherproof your home.

Feeding the Sick or Injured Horse
By Dr. Stephen Duren, Performance Horse Nutrition
The competition season is in full swing; your horse is fit and performing well. Then it happens, the horse takes a bad step and pulls up lame. Your immediate concern is the well-being of the horse. What is the nature of the injury? How severe is the injury? How much competition time will the horse miss? All logical questions, but another question to consider is how to feed this horse to speed recovery? Click here to read the full article in Poulin Grain's Equine Quarterly Newsletter.

Jay Ward's Sport ColumnTwo current big league legends hit major milestones in the baseball season just ended. With a home run on August 16th, Yankees great Derek Jeter joined Willie Mays as the only players in history with at least 3,000 hits, 250 homers 1,200 RBIs and 300 steals. Just three days earlier, Atlanta's Chipper Jones became the fifth player ever to post a multiple-home-run game after the age of 40. The others: Babe Ruth (1935), Hank Aaron (1974), Darrell Evans (1989) and Julio Franco (2005). For more sports trivia, click here.

Another Friday Report reprint from Agnes' Archives, originally printed on August 23, 2002.
By Agnes Ward, Treasurer
You can't go to Ward Lumber in Jay without driving past the now infamous swimming hole down the hill from us.
The swimming hole, known as "the rocks", recently received international recognition when the magazine, Sports Illustrated Women, listed the swimming hole as one of the world's top swim spots (#7). They learned about it from an article in the New York Times entitled "Where the Pools Are Never Crowded and Water Slides Are Nature's Own".
Although these articles portray "the rocks" as a great place to swim, my children were not allowed to swim there because of potential dangers. Unfortunately, the rocks do not have bathroom facilities or trash receptacles which means that the more people visiting the rocks, the greater potential for polluting the river. It's a beautiful spot that has a lot of history--including a shared history with Ward Lumber.
The area now known as "the rocks" used to be covered over by a damn that was used to power several businesses. On the Ward Lumber side of the river, there was a cheese factory, butter factory and griss mill (ingredient for making flour). Just on the other side of the bridge going toward town was the J & J Rogers Company and a blacksmith. Down river, there was a "coke" factory. "Coke" was a wood form of charcoal, and they had six kilns there.
Father Ward (Harvey) would trade lumber for merchandise from Rogers General Store and sometimes pay his employees this way. The building was very large and made of brick. Upstairs, there was an opera house during a time when opera was a primary form of entertainment (mid 1800's). Later, Almund Ward, one of my late husband Sid's brothers, purchased Rogers Company. He turned the opera house into a place to roller skate (late 30's). My sister, Mary Wallace (Town of Jay's Historian) and I used to skate there.
Times have changed but one thing about the rocks hasn't--it's ability to draw people to it's location by it's sheer beauty. Let's all try to do our part in keeping it pristine so that future generations can enjoy "the rocks"!
