I am writing this from The Wickinninnish Inn in Tofino, BC, Canada sitting fireside in my room, looking out the picture window
onto the Pacific Ocean and Canadian Rockies and feeling very blessed. It's my annual vacay with best bud' from UK, Chris. Two highlights... (as it's a very low key trip) was me flying in an 8 seater prop or should I say, lowlight?

And the fact that this is a Relais and Chateaux property and I covet them all :-)
Also had time to reconnect with 25 year friend, Alison Dennis from my fitness industry days. We hadn't seen each other in years and it was great to connect and recollect. Got to walk around Steveston, eat fresh salmon and enjoy gorgeous Vancouver.
I am working backwards this month, and I had just returned from a fun weekend in Vegas with friend/Vistage member Lisa Dunsky to see my girl, JLo - who didn't disappoint!
And then I took time to do the Zappos tour again, which I love.

While home in Chicago, I enjoyed Sunday brunch with my dear friends, Bill Keller and Lisa and Kim. I had another great brunch with Lola Wright, Spiritual Director at my Bodhi Spiritual Center, dinner with new friend, Jill Belconis at Cherry Circle Room, spoke for Maryam Malek's Vistage group from Orange County who had a retreat in Chicago at the Radisson Blu. Had another great time speaking for Teresa Hall Bartels at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Taking a lot of time off to enjoy friends and the summer in Chicago, best time of year.
Always time to enjoy lunch with fabulous speaker, even better friend, Laurie Guest
and on to the evening by sharing hosting duties with member, Craig Reiff and wife, Melissa for the first Vistage Food, Wine, Travel Network dinner at LaBriola's Cafe.
Pictured with two other Vistage members, Beth Fahey , Craig Fichtelberg.
Hope your summer started off well.

PLAY: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul
by Stuart Browm, MD
Long a believer in the power of play as a speaker, facilitator and coach, this book affirmed my beliefs and also taught me the science behind it. Additionally, I learned many new applications of play in many different facets of my life. We see the joy of play in children's faces as they swing in a school park. But in our own lives, we tend to think of play as only a guilty pleasure, a distraction from "real" work and responsibilities. I just returned from my second visit to Zappos in Las Vegas. Nowhere is it more evident about how play inspires culture and employees and ultimately benefits customers.
NOW GO GET THIS BOOK... And take the Zappos tour!

I used to have the most extensive lip collection of anyone...lip couch, lip toilet seat covers, lip you name it I had it. I don't anymore, so please don't send me any :-)
However, people remember and I often get anything reminiscent of my lip days.

QUIRKY QUESTIONS
|
I often ask my Vistage members, aka execs, a question to ponder, be it for fun or for
inclusion, sharing, challenging or just to get to know each other better. Perhaps these questions will serve you at your next dinner party, your own introspection, or just puts a smile on your face.
What is your favorite pizza?

SOCIAL MEDIA GURU GUY by Dave Nelsen
|
Dave's formal title is President, Dialog Consulting Group. From 2005 to 2009 he was CEO of TalkShoe, a social media company now serving more than one million monthly listeners...and the fabulous company I use to produce my monthly teleseminars.
Do One Thing Well...
Not two things poorly. We've all heard the saying but as with many things, it's easier to say than to do. Deviating from my usual script, I'm not going to share an app or a social media tool this time, but instead tell a story about Apple. I'm thinking about this because I've been buying virtually every product Apple has put out for more than a decade. However, I bought an Apple Watch the day it launched and I no longer wear it. The FitBit Charge HR is far better for tracking sleep and exercise (the key functions of a wrist-based wearable), it's more comfortable, and the battery last for days. I bought an iPad Pro (plus Keyboard plus Pencil) the day it launched but two months later I sold it to a friend. It's big and heavy but can't replace my MacBook Pro. I bought an iPad Air 2 instead (Steve Jobs had the size right originally). Read entire article

5 Ways to Keep Stress at Bay!
Ultimately the best way to deal with stress is to seek help from a professional stress management practitioner who can guide you through it. Done individually and for a short period of time, they may have minimal effect, but several of these done together, over time will create positive results. Read entire article

2016 guest columnist: CULTURE COLUMN

Culture of Diversity
Peter Drucker has said, "Demographics are the future that has already happened.
According to US Census bureau data published in March, 2015, by the year 2020, white children will be in the minority and by 2044 whites will outnumbered by non whites. This shift is do to a variety of reasons, primarily, birthrates among whites is in decline while nonwhites are having more children. Given these shifting demographics and increase globalization, the workforce we see and experience today will become radically different over the next 25-30 years. Organizations that build a culture that embraces diversity will be better prepared to succeed with the workforce of the future. There are several reasons to begin a cultural shift in the direction of diversity, NOW, rather than waiting for some talent crisis in the future. The reasons to begin a shift towards a culture of diversity include (but are not limited to):

HE WHO LAUGHS...LASTS!

I've never been totally sold on the concept of Father's Day. For one thing, it was officially declared a national holiday by Richard Nixon, so it might not even be legal.

Fathers Are Forever
Fathers are forever. Even death,
Although a distancing, does not divide
The child from the parent, nor does time,
However long, nor space, however wide.
Enduring beyond silence, beyond breath,
Resonant where hours cease to chime,
Some yearnings inconsolable abide.

Research has shown that mindfulness increases attention, lowers stress, improves physical health and immune functioning, and provides relief from certain kinds of psychological difficulties.
- It allows us to pause before reacting in ways that might be unhelpful or hurtful, or interrupt times when we're already stuck in a negative spiral.
- It invites us to experience our lives more purposefully and more fully.
- It allows us to be more present for the joyful and happy moments of life.
