MUSINGS FROM MIKKI

May Days with Mikki

Well, it may not be sunny and warm yet in Chicago but I have felt sunny and warm all month with great friends, exciting work and more time at home. Busy month!!! Did my DISC program at the IL College of Optometry, thank you Laura Rounce (why didn't we take a pic?) Always honored to be the closing keynote for NSA-IL's Speakers Academy each session, thank you, Bob Roitblat. Loved having CEO, Tom Lawrence from Memphis fly in to do my two day Keynote Kamp (designing an entire speech). Stayed in Chicago (yay!) to do Lori Pedelty's Vistage group, and then met buddy/UK speaker/improv master, John Cremer, for dinner at Del Frisco's Steakhouse

Another DiSC session in VA at Dominion Electric Supply

Stephen Kroot, President & Rick Williams, CEO

plus two Vistage groups. While in the area, made time to have lunch with Bonnie Mason, former Vistage member/dear friend...

and also to have dinner with Pam Ausley, friend of 25 years. Off to Fredericksburg, VA to Quarles hosted by

Paul Giambra President/CEO  www.quarlesinc.com

Took time at FL home to chill and connect with friends, Sue/Jack Ryan, Barbara Monti and the Beaulieus

"All work,
Sue Ryan

no play", is NOT
my motto!

Barbara Monti

Tried one of Chicago's top new restaurants with friends, Beth and Nicki.

Imperial Lamian was terrific! Off to NY for Mom's Day and two gigs. Had a glorious Mother's Day brunch, theater (An American in Paris) and dinner with THE  son, aka Jason.

Dinner with BFF, Kathy, aka Petal, at August.

Dinner with college roomies, Sha' and Tween' at Avra Estiatorio my new favorite restaurant.

Took an afternoon to go to The Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the fashion exhibit Manus x Machina

Had another great Speakers School

and so I am looking forward to the one in July!

In between all that was a variety of speech coaching clients from wherever I was planted, thank you Skype and phone! Declared official start of "Mikki Mondays"...no email, no phone, no people, just me doing work and personal projects, love it!! And lastly, I was notified that I earned the Vistage Chair Excellence Award, one of only 10 women nationwide out of 300.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
I Will Not Die An Unlived Life
Reclaiming Purpose & Passion
by Dawna Markova

OK, OK, I am an eclectic reader (except for fiction, I don't read fiction) For me, reading is relaxation yet also learning and growing in all my roles in life. My favorite genres are memoirs, business and self help. This book falls under self help with a spiritual approach, also of great interest to me. From my presentations, I gather it's a timely issue for many. I love this book and rather than give you a synopsis, I defer to the poem she wrote which speaks of the premise of the title and the book.

I will not die and unlived life,
I will not live in fear
of falling or catching fire,
I choose to inherit my days,
t o allow my living to open me,
to make me less afraid,
more accessible.
to loosen my heart
until it becomes a wing,
a torch, a promise.
I choose to risk my significance,
to live so that which came to ma as seed
goes to the next as blossom,
ad that which came to me as blossom,
goes on as fruit.

MIKKI MOUTH

Things I Wish I'd Said and Some I Did Say!

Enjoy a quote each month from my book - some funny, some poignant, some professional, some just darn cute!

Motherhood is a choice you make everyday to put someone else's happiness and well-being ahead of your own. Love to teach the hard lessons, to do the right thing even when you're not sure what the right thing is... And to forgive yourself, over and over again, for doing everything wrong.

QUIRKY QUESTIONS

I often ask my Vistage members, aka execs, a question to ponder, be it for fun or for

inclusion, sharing, challenging or just to get to know each other better. Perhaps these questions will serve you at your next dinner party, your own introspection, or just puts a smile on your face.

What's the one thing you would have done differently as a mom?
Recently I had this conversation with someone I considered one of the best mothers I know - the kind who never missed a kid's concert or a PTA conference. Her children are grown now, and they are neither independent nor particularly grateful. "I should have let them fail," she told me. "When my daughter forgot to do her homework, I shouldn't have done it for her. When the other one got caught shoplifting, I should have let her spend a night in jail." For better or worse, your mother has probably given this subject a good deal of thought.

None of us is as smart as all of us ... especially when it comes to navigating. If you want to get to your destination faster, safer, and more predictably, it's time to become a Wazer.

To be a Wazer, all you need to do is to download a free app called Waze. Get this: Not long ago, Google and Apple, both of whom already had mapping apps, got in a bidding war, along with another small player called Facebook, to buy this app. Google prevailed at $1,000,000,000. So you know that Waze must be a revolution. And it is. Here's how it works.  Read entire article

5 easy nutrition tips to get in summer shape

We are surrounded by easily accessible, cheap and convenient, and highly alluring food products every where we go. Here are 5 nutrition tips to help bring your daily calorie count down while improving the quality of the foods you eat.

1)     Avoid going to the snack aisle when you are hungry. You are more apt to purchase highly calorie dense nutritionally wanting foods at this time. If you must pick up a small snack, make sure you do it after your meal. It is like going to the grocery store after eating a good meal, you are much more unlikely to purchase impulse snacks.

2)     Make eating out a treat again. Eat breakfast at home and brown bag lunch. If you are following a healthy routine, dinner should be small, balanced and simple.

3)     Prepare meals at home on the weekend and eat them throughout the week. This will reduce your costs, keep you healthier

4)     By bulk healthy snacks and divide them up into baggies for the week. This will make sure you always have a healthy snack option available.

5)     Never eat alone. When dining out, split your meal between you and a friend or loved one. Enjoy the company, eat slower and be rewarded by a thicker wallet and slimmer belt line.

CULTURE COLUMN

by Dr. Gustavo Grodnitzky

Culture of Delegation

Delegation is the process by which responsibility and authority for completion of an objective is assigned to an employee. Delegation allows for leaders and managers to have more time for high priority tasks and present growth opportunities for their direct reports and other members of the organization. Executed properly, delegation can increase productivity, decrease the stress of management, offer training and experience to employees, and give employees a sense of growth and accomplishment. HE WHO LAUGHS...LASTS!
COLUMBUS' MOTHER: I don't care what you've discovered, Christopher.  You could have written.

MICHELANGELO'S MOTHER: Mike, can't you paint on walls like other children?  Do you have any idea how hard it is to get that stuff off the ceiling?

NAPOLEON'S MOTHER: All right, Napoleon. If you aren't hiding your report card inside your jacket, then take your hand out of there and prove it.

GOLDILOCKS'S MOTHER: I've got a bill here for a broken chair from the Bear family.  Do you know anything about this, Goldie?

ALBERT EINSTEIN'S MOTHER: But, Albert, it's your senior picture. Can't you do something about your hair?  Styling gel, mousse, something...?

THOMAS EDISON'S MOTHER: Of course I'm proud that you invented the electric light bulb, Thomas. Now turn off that light and get to bed!

HUMPTY DUMPTY'S MOTHER: Humpty, If I've told you once, I've told you a hundred times not to sit on that wall. But would you listen to me? No!

MIKKI'S MANTRA

INSPIRATION

Thank You Mom For Everything

How did you find the energy, Mom
To do all the things you did,
To be teacher, nurse and counselor
To me, when I was a kid.

How did you do it all, Mom,
Be a chauffeur, cook and friend,
Yet find time to be a playmate,
I just can't comprehend.

I see now it was love, Mom
That made you come whenever I'd call,
Your inexhaustible love, Mom
And I thank you for it all.

MINDFULNESS MOTIVATION

Living in the moment-also called mindfulness-is a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present. When you become mindful, you realize that you are not your thoughts; you become an observer of your thoughts from moment to moment without judging them. Mindfulness involves being with your thoughts as they are, neither grasping at them nor pushing them away. Instead of letting your life go by without living it, you awaken to experience.
