June is for weddings, graduations and Father's Day, all of which I tried to honor in this issue AND... for me to get back to my life. Most of you know I had a back injury in early May which sidelined me for 6 weeks. I am actually on my first plane ride as I write this, thanks to my two knights in shining armor my physical therapist, Kevin Martin and my friend/NSA peer, Bob Roitblatt.
Let me take this opportunity to thank so many of you for the outpouring of love, friendship, gifts, cards, flowers, errand running, doctor driving, food deliveries, I was humbled by it all. Recovery is slow but I am always an optimist.
Not many pics to share except for an array of flowers that filled my home . I took a foray out to the 'burbs (not my usual MO) for a barbecue at Craig and Melissa Reiff's. I would travel anywhere for them... and to see their daughter Carley (who once worked for me) and her charming hubby Julien, in from L.A. where they started a fabulous online biz Soul Escape where I now shop. Back to work in Minneapolis at Knobelsdorff Electric (first trip since the accident),

and dinner with all my pals from Risdall Marketing. Jetted off to New Orleans to speak for the NSA Chapter
and meet incoming president Kevin Gilheany. And thrilled to see Speakers School graduate, coaching client, professional speaker and friend, Marvin LeBlanc. I got back in time for my weekly dose of inspiration at my Bodhi Spiritual Center.
Saw a fabulous musical: "Once," and four movies... OK, OK, a lot, I know, but I was just so happy to be out and about that I couldn't cram enough in to make up for lost time. I did a podcast for Mike Campion's Freaking Genius (see below) and am excited to be emceeing the 2015 ITR Economic Summit with Brian and Alan Beaulieu on the 19th. And start to enjoy the beautiful summer in Chicago. Carpe Summer!!

It's my pleasure to introduce you all to...drum roll please!...Marissa Pedroza...my new Director of Everything-in-training!
Yes, my Sam and I are no longer going steady - I got my class ring back.
Well, actually Sam's just cutting back so she can spend more time becoming Jackie Collins...er, I mean Ernest Hemingway. She'll still be doing special projects on an as-needed basis, and of course we will continue to enjoy our decade long (well almost) friendship. Meanwhile she'll be here for a while training Marissa on all the challenges I've thrown her way over the years.
Marissa comes to us with an amazing skill set, so she'll be up and running in no time. And she fits right in! Here's some of her background: * Executive/Administrative Assistant for the past 14 years * She comes from Freeport, IL and has been living in Chicago for the past 4 years * She has been in the administrative field for 27 years * She has worked in numerous departments from HR to AP/AR prior to becoming an Executive/Administrative Assistant * She is passionate about reading, writing and learning (in whatever order they come in) * Marissa has 2 adult children and 1 grandchild * AND she is a Techie-geek and loves anything high tech.
WELCOME, MARISSA!

MIKKI MOUTH Things I Wish I'd Said and Some I Did Say!
|
Enjoy a quote each month from my book - some funny, some poignant, some professional, some just darn cute!
In honor of graduates everywhere, from Steve Jobs famous 2005 commencement speech...
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."

In Search of Intelligent Life
Just when I showered-off the stench and dried off after last month's back-flip into the deep web for my readers, the headlines were screaming with news regarding the standoff in Congress over privacy versus security and the USA Freedom Act. I cringe every time I hear the words "intelligence community" and "government" used in proximity to each other. Now, I may be just a bit crazy, but how crazy is the big-leaker, Edward Snowden? Many see this political crisis as being entirely his fault. Some see him as a treasonous criminal - but others want to declare him a national hero. What's really crazy is that Snowden has been tearing-up the speaking circuit while in exile by appearing via video feed to a wide range of audiences around the world, and even here in the United States. Snowden might be crazy - but he certainly isn't stupid. There is inescapable irony in the fact that the NSA he betrayed is dependent on tight lips while the other NSA (National Speakers Association) embraces those who blab. This guy is apparently hard-core NSA through and through.
Have you ever noticed that "crazy" and "intelligent" are often compatible characteristics? How often does it seem that the most brilliant people are also cracker-barrel nuts? It's not that they are deliberately being "outrageous" - they simply cannot help themselves. It was Steve Jobs who said, "The people who are crazy enough to believe they can actually change the world are the ones who actually do."
It turns out that to understand the relationship between intelligence and success in life you have to deep dive into what intelligence really is. Which takes me back to the brilliant insight of former President William Jefferson Clinton when he famously suggested that the conveyance of the truth can depend on what the meaning of "is" is. Clinton showed us that intelligence and common sense sometimes leave town on different tracks.
And that leads me to where I want to begin this train of thought: intelligence is generally how we distinguish the human race from other life on our planet. Yet my golden retriever seems much smarter than some people I know. It turns out we actually know much more about intelligence and the implications for human potential than we did just 25 years ago when in 1990 the concept of social intelligence, or as it was to be coined, "Emotional Intelligence," first came to light.

Don't Call It an iWatch
I ordered my Apple Watch on the first day one could: April 10, 2015. Unfortunately, I didn't rise in the middle of the night to do so at the earliest possible hour. So I had to endure an interminable 4 - 6 week wait. The watch finally arrived on Friday, May 15. In case you're curious, I got the larger (42 mm) version with a stainless steel case and black leather magnetic closure band. It runs $699 but throw in AppleCare and taxes and you're well north of $800.
My first impression was that it was beautiful and much easier to set up than I'd expected. Maybe you read the article by the New York Times reporter who claimed that it took him four full days to start to get the hang of it. That's probably because he tried to test virtually every major function and app ASAP. That's not how the rest of us will get started. It's easy and intuitive if you go one function at a time.
The main thing I like about the watch is that it's always with me, even when my phone isn't. That first day I was doing an online registration for one of my vehicles and needed the current mileage from my car's odometer. I left my iPhone sitting on my desk and walked out to the garage. Of course, that's when an important call came in (doesn't it always). Normally, I would have missed it and a game of voicemail tag would have continued. But not this time. I was still within Bluetooth range of my iPhone (reportedly up to 300 feet) and my wrist started ringing. Magic.

That was the name of one of my businesses and oh, come on, I know guys cook, too.
In honor of Dad's grill skills:
GRILLED STEAK SALAD WITH BEETS AND SCALLIONS
Aioli:
- 1/2 cup beef or chicken stock or low-sodium chicken broth
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
- 1 small garlic clove, finely grated
- Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper
Salad:
- 1 pound tri-tip, New York strip, or skirt steak
- 1 garlic clove, halved
- 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper
- 1 bunch scallions or ramps
- 1 bunch spicy greens (such as arugula or mizuna)
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 3 beets, peeled, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
For aioli: Bring stock to a simmer in a small saucepan over medium-low heat; cook until reduced by half, about 5 minutes.
Whisk egg yolk and mustard in a bowl. Whisking constantly, gradually add oil, drop by drop at first, until mixture is very thick. Whisk in lemon juice and garlic; season with salt and pepper. Stir in stock.
For salad: Preheat oven to 200F. Prepare grill for medium-high heat (or heat a grill pan over medium-high). Rub steak with cut sides of garlic and 1 tablespoon oil; season with salt and pepper. Grill, turning several times, until lightly charred and mediumrare (an instant-read thermometer should register 130F), 14-16 minutes. Transfer to a rack set inside a rimmed baking sheet.
Meanwhile, toss scallions on another baking sheet with 1 tablespoon oil; season with salt and pepper. Grill, turning often, until tender, about 4 minutes. Transfer to rack with beef and keep warm in oven.
Arrange greens on a platter; season with salt and pepper. Drizzle with lemon juice and 1 tablespoon oil. Toss beets in a bowl with vinegar and remaining 1 tablespoon oil; season with salt and pepper. Arrange over greens. Slice steak 1/2" thick; top greens with scallions and meat. Pour any juices over; season with salt. Serve with aioli.

Be Outrageous...
It's The Only Place That Isn't Crowded!™
~Mikki Williams
|
In honor of fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers everywhere...
What Is A Dad?
A dad is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again. A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt. A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail...
