Happy Friendsgiving! At this time of year when we are all feeling thankful, I'd like to honor some of the wonderful friends I feel grateful to have.
From my 6543 group (right): Mary (not pictured) Gretchen, Michele and Sandy for our monthly get-togethers, this time at the theatre to see
Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, to my BFF, Chris (top left in photo at left) from Wales and other gal pals at Eddie V's spending a weekend of pure joy, to my dear friend Chef Otto in Dallas (right),

There are so many more whom I feel so fortunate to have in my life, and if I didn't mention you please don't feel slighted. I love you all - truly. I am so blessed for your friendship. Then, on to my clients who have become friends: Stan Wyner (left) in Buffalo (thanks for my favorite beef on 'weck sandwiches), to Dallas for a big event with Ken (right) and Nina (below), my new favorite author (other than Sam, of course) ,

Radical Acceptance
Embracing Your Life with the Heart of a Buddha by Tara Brach, Ph.D
I've been on a spiritual path for a while. Last year I found my home at Bodhi Spiritual Center here in Chicago (if you are on the same journey, check out Centers for Spiritual Living to find one in your community. Part of my search involves reading more about spirituality as it fits into my life. This book is part of that journey. So what is Radical Acceptance? Radical means complete and total. It's when you accept something from the depths of your soul. When you accept it in your mind, in your heart, and even with your body. It's total and complete. When you've radically accepted something, you're not fighting it. And my personal definition of spirituality has been "giving up control for acceptance."
This book affirms what I embrace at this juncture of life. I believe it reconnects me to who I really am and what it means to live life fully. This may be too "Ghandi" for some of you. For me, it's just saying yes to the moment, yes to just what is.

MIKKI MOUTH Things I Wish I'd Said and Some I Did Say!

Enjoy a quote each month from my book - some funny, some poignant, some professional, some just darn cute!
"Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence."

There is no evidence that turkey was eaten at the first Thanksgiving, a three day meal shared between the pilgrims and the Wamponoag tribe in 1621. It is more likely that they ate venison and a lot of seafood.

Finding the Best Employees
LinkedIn.com allows you to do some amazing things when it comes to hiring. Even ignoring (and maybe you shouldn't) the premium recruiting features such as LinkedIn Recruiter, LinkedIn Job Posting, LinkedIn Career Pages, and LinkedIn Talent Solutions, consider these two killer ideas:
First ...
The majority of us (including me) believe that the most talented people almost always have jobs unless they choose not to. Periodically, they transition from one position to another but they're rarely if ever openly "on the market" with their resumes posted on Monster, Dice, or CraigsList. That's where the bottom 6% lives (sorry to be so harsh in a still tough jobs economy).
Why not proactively pursue the top 94%?
As part of LinkedIn's basic (AKA free) service, there is a mode called "Advanced People Search." You can access this mode by clicking the "Advanced" button just to the right of the "Search" box that appears at the top of every LinkedIn page. I call this mode "Google for finding people."
Notice that you can then search for people based on keywords, companies they've worked for (current or past), schools, job titles, and more, all within a specified radius of a given ZIP or postal code. Amazing!
Create a relevant search query and then proactively pursue the best and the brightest.
Second ...
Most companies believe in reference checking. But if you get your references from your candidates, I've got a question for you: "What kind of sociopath can't come up with three good references?"
Traditional reference checking is a feel-good waste of time. Instead, try what I call "blind" reference checking. You'll have to upgrade to the $7.95/month LinkedIn Spotlight plan, but then you'll be able to (quoting LinkedIn here), "Get a list of people in your network who can provide a reference for someone you are interested in."
I'd recommend even asking permission from your candidates. Not only will this help you avoid a lawsuit (yes, someone is actually currently suing a company that used this feature ... and then passed on hiring them), it will likely unmask the bad candidates up front. "You're not comfortable with blind reference checking? Thanks for opting out of our process."
I'm not advocating doing anything that violates Affirmative Action, EEOC (the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), or any other law or fairness principle. I'm simply suggesting that in the war for talent, you should give your company every advantage! LinkedIn will get you there.

That was the name of one of my businesses and oh, come on, I know guys cook, too.
Dried Cranberry, Apricot, and Fig Stuffing
A light variation that's a nice counterpoint to the many rich dishes on the Thanksgiving table.
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 3 cups chopped onions (about 1 pound)
- 2 cups chopped celery (4 to 5 stalks)
- 1 pound Granny Smith apples (about 2 medium), peeled, cored, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh marjoram
- 1 cup (or more) low-salt chicken broth
- 1/2 cup diced dried apricots
- 1/2 cup dried sweetened cranberries
- 1/2 cup diced stemmed dried figs
- 12 cups (generous) 1-inch cubes day-old pain rustique or ciabatta bread with crust (about 1 1/4 pounds)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 teaspoons fine sea salt
- 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
Melt butter in heavy large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and celery. Saut until tender, about 12 minutes. Add apples and all herbs. Saut until apples just begin to soften, about 3 minutes. DO AHEAD: Can be made 1 day ahead. Transfer to medium bowl, cover, and chill.
Mix 1 cup broth and dried fruit in bowl. Let soak at least 1 hour and up to 3 hours.
Preheat oven to 350F. Divide bread between 2 rimmed baking sheets. Bake until bread is crusty but not hard, reversing sheets after 5 minutes, 10 to 12 minutes total. Transfer to very large bowl and cool.
Butter 13x9x2-inch baking dish. Stir vegetable mixture into bread. Whisk eggs, salt, and pepper in small bowl to blend; whisk in broth and dried fruit mixture. Add egg mixture to stuffing, tossing to combine evenly and adding more broth by 1/4 cupfuls if dry. Transfer stuffing to prepared dish.
Bake stuffing uncovered until cooked through and brown and crusty on top, 50 to 60 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes.

A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York the day before Thanksgiving and says, "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough." "Pop, what are you talking about?" the son screams. "We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the father says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her." Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this." She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says, "they're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way."

"Today may there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us." ~ Saint Terese of Liseaux
