October comes from the Greek OCTO meaning 'having eight', and this month I feel like the proverbial octopus with eight arms or heads...just crazy-busy but as always, fun stuff.
I kicked off the month with a speech at the gorgeous Ritz Carlton, Half Moon Bay, CA.
Then home to throw a party for my favorite gal pals (any excuse to have a party!) chez Mikki for KEY member, Karolyn Raphael to sell her always fab' Stella and Dot Jewelry.
 | Jewelry party |
We had a happy/sad goodbye party (below) for longstanding Vistage CEO member Rich Westrick as he takes over as COO at the helm of ITR, my other member Brian Beaulieu's company. Yes, Brian stole him but it's a good thing all the way around.

We celebrated with an outrageous custom cake from Beth Fahey's Creative Cakes.
Then I went off to weekend in the "burbs" (yes me, in the 'burbs} with BFF Lynn LaPalermo to celebrate the opening of her new amazing

lash/brow salon OcchiLashes and then I took her to Chicago DOSE Market, (if you've never been, it's a must).
Our Vistage KEY meeting in September was hosted by Tony Millhouse of
Parksite (below)., and we all enjoyed the tour and the hard hats (sorry, I don't have a picture of us with the hats!)

My 6543 monthly gal pal meet-up
was at Eddie V's in Chicago and, as usual, it was a lot of laughs.
Had another awesome Speakers School in September with another awesome group. I love watching the friendships that are forged there; how supportive people are of each other and how they bond over this shared experience.

Connecting people is one of the joys of my life, and Speakers School is another way that I get to do that.
Then off I went to my Florida digs (below) for some R and R.

And if that's not enough, last week was particularly insane...Chair meeting Monday, to Minneapolis on Tuesday to meet with web designers (and sneak in another dose of Mary Hoffman...always a good thing!), dinner with clients, speak on Wednesday, flew back that night to host an all-day customized program for my CEOs on exit planning with the inimitable Patrick Ungashick from Atlanta (which they loved). Then the next morning I left for my Vistage KEY retreat at The American Club in Kohler, WI, hosted by my awesome Member of the Year, Jose Eguiguren (below, left), where our speaker was everyone's favorite, Michael Allosso. (Group photo below).
And then, I went to NYC to celebrate my darling son Jason's birthday. Whew!

A Boy Becomes a Man In Nam:
Understanding the Cause of PTSD
by Chuck Reaves
I have known Chuck Reaves for decades and know what a prolific speaker and writer he is. Never more so than in his poignant recapturing of his experiences in Vietnam. Chuck is a decorated Vietnam veteran who explains how the military experience can create PTSD. For veterans this book is a valuable tool in understanding their own PTSD and for explaining it to their family and friends. For war protesters during the time of the Vietnam War, it brings closure and greater understanding.
The forward was written by Captain Jerry Coffee, a POW in the Hanoi Hilton for seven years. The book closes by offering the reader ideas for earning their own medal and for being a hero.

Trick-or-treating evolved from the
ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year.

Social Media in China (Not Exactly as We Know and Love It)
As I write this, I'm on one of the fastest trains on the planet, moving at exactly 304 km/h (over 185 mph) between Shanghai to Beijing. Indeed, I'm on a two-week journey through China. My brother's here on a two-year rotation as part of his job.
China is an amazing country, full of amazing sights, and amazing people. But there's one thing here that's amazing in a different way ... and it's a reminder to us in the United States (and many other places) to be truly appreciative of the Internet as we know it, NSA monitoring and all.
My brother and his family were not home when my wife and I arrived at their Shanghai apartment. Having been offline for 24-hours, my first move -- after locating his wine collection -- was to jump on his WiFi network to synch email, check Facebook, access ...
Oops! You can't access Facebook in China. Well, I'll just have to read my birthday wishes after the fact. Not a huge deal.
Instead, since we're in the midst of the so called Hong Kong Umbrella Rebellion (I mean in time rather than place) I'll entertain myself by checking Twitter to see what's happened in the past day. No, you can't go there either.
No worries. I'll use the NYTimes App on my iPad to access the latest news. Fail! Nytimes.com is blocked too.
I'll just have to use Google to investigate which websites I can access from China. No, you can't do that either. Google, Gmail, Google+ ... they're all blocked.
Then I remember; I've saved some documents from my brother on my Box.net or Dropbox account. It's time to read them. I'll have to check both sites...

That was the name of one of my businesses and oh, come on, I know guys cook, too.
Halloween Peanut Butter and Toffee Candy Bar
Makes about 2 pounds or 30 two- inch pieces
1 pound bittersweet chocolate chips
3 2.1-ounce Butterfinger candy bars, cut into irregular 1-inch pieces
3 1.4-ounce Skor or Heath toffee candy bars, cut into irregular 3/4-inch pieces
8 0.55-ounce peanut butter cups, each cut into 8 wedges
1/4 cup honey-roasted peanuts
3 ounces high-quality white chocolate (such as Lindt or Perugina), chopped
Reese's Pieces and/or yellow and orange peanut M&M's
preparation
Line baking sheet with foil. Stir chocolate chips in heavy medium saucepan over low heat until melted and warm (not hot) to touch. Pour chocolate onto foil; spread to 1/4- inch thickness (about 12x10-inch rectangle). Sprinkle with Butterfinger candy, toffee, peanut butter cups, and nuts, making sure all pieces touch melted chocolate to adhere.
Put white chocolate in heavy small saucepan. Stir constantly over very low heat until chocolate is melted and warm (not hot) to touch. Remove from heat. Dip spoon into chocolate; wave from side to side over bark, creating zigzag lines. Scatter Reese's Pieces and M&M's over, making sure candy touches melted chocolate.
Chill bark until firm, 30 minutes. Slide foil with candy onto work surface; peel off foil. Cut bark into irregular pieces.

More Truths for Humans There is great need for a sarcasm font. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet? Was learning cursive really necessary?

Visionary - adjective (esp. of a person), thinking about or planning the future with imagination or wisdom
I speak of volunteerism is my speeches. I tell stories to inspire and challenge audiences to volunteer as individuals, as responsible business and community leaders. as parents/grandparents, and to get their children involved early. By the way, volunteerism is the number one way to raise self-esteem. What are you doing in this visionary effort? Each month I will give you a link to a site where you can volunteer. Please send me a link to your favorite volunteer opportunity to post.
The American veteran is one of our greatest treasures-the men and women who answered our nation's call, especially at times of our greatest need. At Honor Flight Chicago, our mission is to thank and pay tribute to these heroes-especially our World War II veterans-by bringing them to Washington, D.C. for a day of honor and remembrance at no cost to them.
Without the dedication and commitment of all of our volunteers and donors, we would not be able to deliver on the promise of honoring our WWII heroes. We hope you will join us on our mission. |
Register now for the next school on February 5-7, 2015.
Note: There will be a price increase in January 2015
