MUSINGS FROM MIKKI

Considering I took all of August off on a writing sabbatical for my book and webpage revamp, I thought I didn't do much until I started writing this. I didn't travel, speak or coach but I must admit I underestimated the depth and breadth of those two simultaneous projects, so they are both near completion but I didn't make my self-imposed deadline.

Stay tuned for both announcements.

Rick Bayless
Rick Bayless

I did find time for some play, as always, and enjoyed Rick

Bayless' Cascabel a sensory dining experience. In this sensual tale of love and hunger, the audience joins the guests of the boardinghouse Cascabel at their courtyard table. Way cool!

Deb, Sandy, Sam and me at
Rod Stewart

Saw Rod Stewart and Santana

in concert. Rod sang THE song and I GOT the T-shirt, (know which one?).

Had dinner with good bud/Vistage speaker/Chair Harvey Goldberg at Piccolo Sogno when was in town.

At the end of the month, I took on one speaking gig at Garden of the Gods (below) in Colorado, then had a Wine and Wrinkles Party for my friends, Ani and Tamilee (below) from San Diego to showcase Ani's amazing skincare products

Also took my personal trainer, John Godoy (who writes for this ezine - check out his column below) out to Moto (a most unusual restaurant of molecular gastronomy) for his birthday (below).

Had a great time at the fund-raising party for "my" Bodhi Spiritual Center, held at the home of Lola Wright, Executive Director and Vistage member. Here I am, below, at the party, with Mark Anthony Lord, Founder of Bodhi.

Caught up with Aimee Daniels, leader of Chicago Vistage Chairs, as we dined at Nacional 27 (we both love Latin Dance) but alas, alack, couldn't stay awake till the band started at 11PM. LOL!

Enjoyed the Jazz Festival at gorgeous Millennium Park (left) then dinner with superstar sales guru, Jack Daly.

If you put together all the events of my month, nothing compares to a four-hour dinner with superstar, super sales speaker, superman Jack Daly (below). WOW!  I'm still spinning and smiling.

Catch him somewhere in the country.

While dining with Jack, a gal stopped me to ask if I was Betsey Johnson, funky fashion designer. I get that a lot - what do you think?

I finished the month with the Vistage All-City, aka Executive Summit, where my Outrageous Orator speaker Mike Maddock killed it! So proud of you, Mike. Here I am with the amazing Sekou Andrews, kick-off speaker and world's #1 Poetic Voice, at the Summit. And had a great time with my members who also attended, and topped it off with a dinner with all the Chairs. What a great day...and a great month.

I am now in re-entry on a plane to San Francisco to speak.

See you next month!

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

Prosperity in the Age of Decline

How to Lead Your Business and Preserve WealthThrough the Coming Business Cycles

by Brian and Alan Beaulieu

In the spirit of full disclosure, Brian Beaulieu is my Vistage member and I adore him but...if I didn't love this book then I simply wouldn't review it!!!  But...I did love this book, not only for the  on-target economic trend forecasting (94.7 accuracy) but for the valuable insights that will help guide your investment strategies or at the very least, make you more knowledgeable about what lies ahead and how that will affect you in business and personally. Who wouldn't want to be armed with info that will help us make better-informed decisions, be proactive in that decision making, feel confident
that we are on top of our competitive advantage, deal with the uncertainties that lie ahead and plan intelligently? And if you read between the lines, you'll know this is a great gift for your kids or anyone you know who will be facing the future even longer term.

NOW GO GET THIS BOOK!

SOCIAL MEDIA GURU GUY
Dave NelsenDave Nelsen

Dave's formal title is President, Dialog Consulting Group

From 2005 to 2009 he was CEO of TalkShoe, a social media company now serving more than one million monthly listeners...and the fabulous company I use to produce my monthly teleseminars.

Wearable Technology

For the last four years, I've been wearing a BodyMedia armband to track my sleep and exercise. It's the same device that they use on The Biggest Loser. We call this practice "the quantified self." It can be life-changing when you have data about your actual sleep and exercise times. Most people don't sleep as much as they think they do.

Neuroscientists have proven that 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week, coupled with an average of 8 hours of sleep each night not only makes you healthier, it makes you substantially smarter. It's due to a chemical produced during aerobic exercise that triggers production of a different chemical in your brain known as brain-derived neurotropic factor. BDNF not only protects neurons under stress; it grows new neurons and neural connections. Said another way, it improves memory and learning.

I'm mentioning this now because, until now, it's been the geeks, the exercise nuts and the early adopters who've pioneered "wearable tech." But I predict with 99.99% confidence that tens of millions of people, including probably you, are going to join us in 2015. That's because yesterday Apple announced the iWatch. Not only is it fabulously functional, it's famously fashionable. Yes, you'll want one.

Here's what will happen when you don your new iWatch: You'll see your sleep and exercise numbers. Then you'll change your caffeine and alcohol consumption patterns to improve your sleep. You'll swear off red-eye airline flights and late night Netflix binging. You'll become more competitive with your active friends as Strava, Nike+, MyFitnessPal, and a host of other exercise apps help you track and compete across space and time. And at the end of every day, you'll check to see if you hit your 10,000 step target.

You'll be on a path to thinking more clearly, learning faster, and living longer. And then you'll buy a lifetime membership at Lumocity.com and take things to an even higher level. Or at least that's my story from the past four years.

If you're wondering, yes, I really love my BodyMedia device but I'll be moving to the iWatch on Day 1. I just need to decide which one will look best. So many choices ...

THE HAPPY COOKER
That was the name of one of my businesses and oh, come on, Little girl chefI know guys cook, too.

Roasted cauliflower? Been there, done that. But a WHOLE HEAD? How fabulous is that?!

Spicy Whole Roasted Cauliflower

Serves 6

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 head cauliflower

1 cups plain Greek yogurt

1 lime, zested and juiced

2 tablespoons chile powder

1 tablespoon cumin

1 tablespoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon curry powder

2 teaspoons kosher salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

1. Preheat the oven to 400 and lightly grease a small baking sheet with vegetable oil. Set aside.

2. Trim the base of the cauliflower to remove any green leaves and the woody stem.

3. In a medium bowl, combine the yogurt with the lime zest and juice, chile powder, cumin, garlic powder, curry powder, salt and pepper.

4. Dunk the cauliflower into the bowl and use a brush or your hands to smear the marinade evenly over its surface. (Excess marinade can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to three days and used with meat, fish or other veggies.)

5. Place the cauliflower on the prepared baking sheet and roast until the surface is dry and lightly browned, 30 to 40 minutes. The marinade will make a crust on the surface of the cauliflower.

6. Let the cauliflower cool for 10 minutes before cutting it into wedges and serving alongside a big green salad.

INSPIRATION
"I'd always believed that a life of quality, enjoyment, and wisdom were my human birthright and would be automatically bestowed upon me as time passed.  I never
suspected that I would have to learn how to live - that there were specific disciplines and ways of seeing the world I had to master before I could awaken to a simple, happy, uncomplicated life."
~Dan Millman
VISIONARY VOLUNTEERISM

Visionary - adjective (esp. of a person), thinking about or planning the future with imagination or wisdom

People Touching PeopleI speak of volunteerism is my speeches. I tell stories to inspire and challenge audiences to volunteer as individuals, as responsible business and community leaders. as parents/grandparents, and to get their children involved early. By the way, volunteerism is the number one way to raise self-esteem. What are you doing in this visionary effort? Each month I will give you a link to a site where you can volunteer. Please send me a link to your favorite volunteer opportunity to post.
