MUSINGS FROM MIKKI

Well, it's mid August and I am smack dab in the throws of my writing sabbatical. I am diligently working on my book and my new website, and assorted other projects while at home in Chicago. The weather has been cooperating and I am out at the various beautiful parks around the city and even running the lakefront every morning...yes really (Magritte feet below - a sculpture promoting the exhibit at The Art Institute)!

But before all this...I was at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, a five star resort that I always wanted to visit (and we know how much I love luxury).
Got to meet up with friend and Chair Karen Meenan (below) while working with one of my favorite Chairs, Sam Jones (above) from Austin and some of his great members.

Had another awesome Speakers School with, as always, an eclectic mix of people from a doctor to a New York comedienne, to business owners to Vistage speakers and Chairs and even the CEO of TEC Canada (they didn't change their name to Vistage).
I also celebrated my long standing popular member Sandy Marsico's big birthday bash with 100 of her closest friends. The theme was Sip, Sparkle and Shine...hmmmm, so difficult finding anything like that in my closet to wear.
Here's a photo (right) of my Sam, aka Director of Everything, flanked by Vistage members Sherri Heckenast and Jim Zimmer.
And below is me with one of my favorite clients and good friend, Lisa Resnick, SR VP Genworth Financial, at my last training for all their agents.

One of the other nice parts about being home is time to spend with good friends ,and being able to enjoy this wonderful city that I love so much.

Went to dinner at The Dawson, great new restaurant, live music with Vistage member and dear friends Craig and Melissa Reiff (below).
And the highlight of the month if you didn't read it on my Facebook page was the man who spilled red wine on my dress on the airplane and felt so badly that he kept uttering he was going to buy me a new dress and when I got to my hotel to unpack I found $500 in my carry on that he obviously slipped in when I dashed up front to get some Club Soda to remove the stain.
A class act and another good example of not judging the proverbial book by it's cover.  Enjoy the rest of your summer!

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

Date Like a CEO

Leadership in Life and Love for Men

by Nina Atwood (Vistage Chair)

Why am I reading a book for men? A few reasons...this e-book was written by a friend and fellow Vistage Chair who is also an international dating coach. Nina is a licensed psychotherapist with twenty five years in private practice, an expert media resource, and one of the foremost authorities on dating and love relationships.  All of her books share great insights into the intricacies of relationships which I find to be a fascinating topic. The story format of the book makes it an easy and quick read (something CEOs like in their reading material) with a lot of great ideas. Many men (and women) make unhealthy choices and have diminished expectations in relationships of love. Read this book, and begin your journey toward love, happiness and connection at levels you've never imagined before.

TITILLATING TRIVIA

Millions of Millennials

I read recently that the millennials, the 14-to-32-year-old crowd also referred to as Gen Y, are soon to become the majority of business travelers. That claim is so astounding that I had to check the facts.

It turns out that it's true. Gen Y is a huge group - 79 million Americans - making its size on par with the baby boomers. Gen X, which came in between (sandwich anyone?), is substantially smaller. Throw in the fact that younger people are more willing to travel (fewer family commitments, greater zest for adventure, etc.) and you start to get the picture.

This demographic development has travel-related companies scrambling to redefine their services. Hilton announced last week that it intends to allow travelers to check in via smartphone, pick their own rooms from floor plan maps, and then use their smartphones as their room keys ... all by sometime in 2015. OMG @Hilton #crazy #awesome #epic #just_sayin' (In other words, it sounds good to me.)

So you're not in a travel-related business; why should you care? Well, the boomers are starting to retire and you can't replace them one-for-one with Gen X'ers. There aren't enough of them. So the American workforce is about to get younger. Millennials are your future employees and your customers' future employees (and therefore your future customers).

If you're not currently re-engineering your products, your corporate culture, your mobile-friendly website, your social media programs, and your company's apps (say what?) ... well, you may not be in business tomorrow. Consider this small article to be your big wake-up call. Follow Hilton's lead a.s.a.p.

It's time to embrace the millennials and learn to serve them, before your competitors do.

THE HAPPY COOKER
That was the name of one of my businesses and oh, come on, Little girl chefI know guys cook, too.

S'mores Cheesecake with Summer Berries

Makes 8 to 10 servings

9" Graham cracker crust

9 ounces high-quality milk chocolate (such as Lindt or Ghirardelli), chopped

2 8-ounce packages cream cheese, room temperature

3/4 cup sugar

1/8 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup heavy whipping cream

3 large eggs

Stir chocolate in top of double boiler set over barely simmering water until smooth. Remove from over water and cool to lukewarm, stirring occasionally.

Combine cream cheese, sugar, and salt in processor and blend until smooth. With motor running, add whipping cream through feed tube and process just until blended. With motor running, add melted chocolate, then add eggs 1 at a time, blending and scraping down sides after each addition until mixture is smooth. Pour batter over crust in pan.

Bake cake until outer edge is slightly puffed and cake is barely set in center (center will look shiny and move slightly when pan is gently shaken), about 55 minutes. Transfer cake to rack. Run small sharp knife around cake to loosen. Chill uncovered until cold, 8 hours or overnight. DO AHEAD: Can be made 2 days ahead. Cover and keep refrigerated.

For topping:

Whisk 1 cup sugar, 2 large egg whites, 3 tablespoons water, 1 tsp. cream of tartar, and 1/8 teaspoon salt to blend in large metal bowl. Set bowl over saucepan of simmering water; whisk constantly until sugar dissolves and mixture thickens and is hot to touch, about 3 minutes. Remove bowl from over water and stir in 12 large marshmallows that have been cut into quarters (keep water simmering in saucepan). Let stand until marshmallows soften, about 3 minutes. Set bowl with mixture over simmering water; using hand-held electric mixer, beat until stiff shiny peaks form, about 4 minutes. Beat in 1/2 tsp. vanilla.

Scrape topping onto cheesecake. Using offset metal spatula, spread topping to edges of cake, swirling decoratively. Let stand until set, about 15 minutes.

Using kitchen torch, lightly brown topping in spots. (Or preheat broiler; place cake at least 4 inches from heat source and broil just until topping is lightly browned in spots, watching closely to avoid burning, about 2 minutes.)

Chill cake until cold. DO AHEAD: Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover with cake dome and keep chilled. Remove pan sides. Place cake on platter.

Mix raspberries and blueberries in medium bowl. Cut cake into wedges. Serve berry mixture alongside.

INSPIRATION

The Optimist's Creed

Promise Yourself. . .

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature you meet.

To give so much time to improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud word, but in great deeds.

To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side, so long as you are true to the best that is in you.

- Christian Larson
