June is bustin' out all over with Father's Day, weddings, beginning of summer (not in Chicago, we haven't even had Spring)...

What a month! I kicked it off with my annual Gathering of the

Gathering of the Goddesses

Goddesses in Las Vegas. They came from NY to L.A. - 16 amazing women, from a Southwest Airlines pilot to the founder of Equinox Fitness Clubs and everything in between - the most dynamic

Kiss - Vegas

group of women ever assembled. Here we are at my surprise activity, black light mini-golf at a Kiss-themed club. What a blast!

Back home, I took time out to dine at the impossible-to-get-a-

Change Intelligence

Use the Power of CQ to Lead Change that Sticks

by Barbara A. Trautlein, PhD

In today's business world everyone knows that we all face constant change. We also know that the ability to handle such change makes the difference  between success and failure...and has a direct impact on the bottom line.

With an innovative approach, the author challenges the conventional methodologies of dealing with change without the benefit of understanding CQ - change intelligence...the skill set that allows you to lead your team or company through vital transformations. The added benefit of the book is the attached proprietary code for your own CQ assessment to learn your change leadership style and discover practical strategies for leveraging your strengths.

TITILLATING TRIVIA

The origins of Father's Day

It was while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 that the idea of Father's Day suddenly struck Spokane, Washington resident  Sonora Dodd. She wanted to honor her own father, William Smart, who was well-deserving of a special day as a widowed farmer left alone to raise his six kids single-handedly.

Father's Day

A short year later, residents embraced the idea so warmly that by June 19, 1910 the first Father's Day celebration was proclaimed in Spokane because it was the month of Dodd's father's birth. Decades later the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Father's Day in America has been officially celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent.

Due to her efforts, Sonora Dodd is known today as "the mother of Father's Day."

SOCIAL MEDIA GURU GUY
Dave NelsenDave Nelsen

Dave's formal title is President, Dialog Consulting Group

From 2005 to 2009 he was CEO of TalkShoe, a social media company now serving more than one million monthly listeners...and the fabulous company I use to produce my monthly teleseminars.

The May 1st headline of Business Insider screamed: "Suddenly, Google Plus is Outpacing Twitter to Become the World's Second Largest Social Network."

Well, I'm not sure about the "suddenly" part. We would ignore any Google initiative at our peril, especially something as important as their social networking initiative. They're fully committed to success in this area because they're worried about their core business. Why would we Google something if we could query our Facebook friends?

Since I've just said the F word, have you noticed that business-to-business (B2B) initiatives don't usually work on Facebook? Here's my theory as to why.

On Facebook, almost everything you do is shared with your "friends" and with their "friends." The problem is that I use Facebook to share my family and personal pursuits. Typically, I don't want this same information to be seen by my professional associates. It's not just me; we all have somewhat separate personal and professional personas and it's best if there's not too much cross-bleed. If you think I'm crazy, I ask you, "Do you dress the same for the office as you do at home on weekends?" Why not?

In real life, we don't share everything with everybody. Instead, we have various circles of associates with whom we have different conversations.

Jobs

Motorola's next flagship phone, the Moto X, will be the first smartphone assembled in the U.S. The designers and engineers are based in the US and assembly will be in a 500,000 square foot facility in Fort Worth, Texas. Not all the components will be made here. The company estimates it will be adding 2,000 jobs by August.

More good news: Apple will be making one of its IMac computers in the U.S. this summer and Lenovo has already started making some to its computers in North Carolina.Motorola enumerated some of the advantages of doing this work in the U.S. and they are exactly what we have been talking about in our meetings; rising labor costs in China, ease of design changes when the work is done here, leaner supply chain, faster response to purchasing and customer demands, and low cost energy (especially natural gas).

Please note that there was no federal stimulus money spent in creating these jobs. A free-market environment created the right opportunities for a company to make a sound business decision. Motorola did not expound on why Texas was chosen, but access to labor, energy, and a pro-business climate in a right-to-work state could not have hurt Texas any in the decision making process.

THE HAPPY COOKER
That was the name of one of my businesses and oh, come on, Little girl chefI know guys cook, too.

If it ever gets warm in Chicago to barbeque...

Grilled Corn with Honey-Ginger Barbecue Sauce
Makes 8 servings

Grilled Corn 1-1/4 cups warm Honey-Ginger Barbecue Sauce (recipe below)

16 ears of corn, shucked

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 teaspoon salt

Prepare Honey-Ginger Barbecue Sauce and divide equally into two bowls.

Prepare grill for direct-heat cooking over medium-hot charcoal (medium-high for gas),

drizzle corn with oil on a large rimmed baking sheet, and sprinkle evenly with salt. Lightly rub oil and salt into corn.

Oil grill rack, then grill corn (covered only if using gas), turning frequently, until lightly browned and tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Move corn to different positions on grill if hot spots are present.

Brush corn with some of prepared sauce and grill, turning, until sauce is hot, 1 to 2 minutes. Serve with reserved sauce.

Honey-Ginger Barbecue Sauce

Makes 1-1/4 cups

1-1/2 cups apple cider vinegar

1/2 cup mild honey

1/2 cup ketchup

1-1/2 tablespoons hot sauce, such as Tabasco

4 large garlic cloves, minced

2 tablespoons minced peeled ginger

1 teaspoon salt

Stir together all sauce ingredients in a 2 to 2-1/2 quart heavy saucepan and briskly simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until thickened and reduced to about 1-1/4 cups, 25 to 30 minutes. (Stir frequently toward end of cooking to prevent sticking.)

HE WHO LAUGHS...LASTS!
Laughing baby

In this June month of weddings...

Weddings

"The thrill is gone from my marriage," Bill told his friend Doug.
"Why not add some intrigue to your life and have an affair?" Doug suggested.
"But what if my wife finds out?"
"Heck, this is a new age we live in, Bill. Go ahead and tell her about it!"
So Bill went home and said, "Dear, I think an affair will bring us closer together."
"Forget it," said his wife. "I've tried that - it never worked."

INSPIRATION

What Makes a Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,

The majesty of a tree,

The warmth of a summer sun,

The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,

The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages,

The power of the eagle's flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,

The faith of a mustard seed,

The patience of eternity,

The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,

When there was nothing more to add,

He knew His masterpiece was complete,

And so, He called it ... Dad
