Happy YOU Year!
2013! Goals! Resolutions! Promises! Whatever you call them, I've got them...big time! Yes friends, it's re-invention time again so stay tuned! The theme for the year is
Mikki at Home which means less travel and more time to do some of the personal things that have been on hold. What? you may ask. Well...dance classes, cooking classes, learning Italian, exploring Kabbalah, volunteering, entertaining...things that give me so much pleasure. In line with that, what are your priorities for the new year? I have lots of new entreprenurial ventures (or adventures): it's the year of my book, my one-woman show, more Vistage, preferred clients, Outrageous Orators, more Speaker Schools, the Mikki Mouth Club and yes, even more. I'm very excited about the new divisions of the Mikki Mouth Club: Accountability Academy, Speaker Source and Keynote Kamp.
Watch for upcoming eblasts.
December was...well, December, - crazy holiday time.
I did a few gigs in Cleveland
(pictured with Andrew Milan, VP of Milan Tool
(right) and Jim Carulas, CEO (below) of Meaden and Moore.
As always, I loved my parties with my two Vistage groups.
The guest speaker for both my meetings was good friend, Emmy award winning interviewer. and now Vistage speaker Bill Boggs, pictured below at my Key holiday event at Francesca's Tavola in Arlington Hts.
Enjoyed a great time with my CEO group at Tavern at the Park. Here I am pictured with Members of the Year, Craig Reiff (below left) and Jonathan Lazarow (right). First time in 11 years we've ever had two at the same time.
Then I was off to my Florida home for two weeks to kick start the new year. I welcomed my good friend, former audience member and CEO Kimberly Martinez who has a great attitude, and brought wine, roses, hummus and pitettes.
What a great house guest! Thanks, Kim.
Well, gotta run now, and catch up to all my goals, now go get yours!

The Talent Code
Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How
by Daniel Coyle
As someone who is fascinated by the field of human potential I couldn't wait to read this book which deals with how to maximize potential in yourself and others. Drawing on cutting-edge technology and firsthand research, the author has discovered three main commonalities: deep practice, ignition and master coaching. Everyone knows practice is a key
to success but what Coyle reveals is the specific kind of practice that can increase skill up to ten times faster.
Ignition is about motivation, passion and commitment - other areas that I continue to explore.
And master coaching deals with the secrets of the world's most effective teachers, trainers and coaches.
Now, go get this book!!

The Times Square New Year's Eve Ball came about as a result of a ban on fireworks. The first ball, in 1907, was an illuminated 700-pound iron and wood ball adorned with one hundred 25-watt light bulbs. Today, the round ball, designed by Waterford Crystal, weighs 11,875 pounds, is 12 feet in diameter and is bedazzled with 2,668 Waterford crystals.

"Social" Market Research - Learning About Any Industry
There's a great way to learn about any industry using LinkedIn Groups. I do this every time I land a client in an industry that I've not served before. Or when I'm pursuing a new prospect in the same situation. Marketing and Sales professionals, listen up!
For example, when I landed a new client in the digital printing business recently, I joined the "Digital Printing" group in LinkedIn (use the Groups Directory function to search on relevant words or phrases). Not only does the Digital Printing group have more than 38,000 members, but there are also subgroups for specialties including Wide Format printing, Label printing, and such. In the main group alone, there are 250 discussions ongoing right now - on the important issues and opportunities of the day.
By reviewing these discussion threads, you can learn about the industry at a hyper-accelerated rate. In essence, you're learning from 38,000 brains rather than just your own (remember, "None of us is as smart as all of us!").
Better yet, you can post a question and get answers directly from these people. If you're thinking about offering a new product or service, why not ask them for their input before making your investment.
There are a variety of other ways to benefit from LinkedIn Groups. If you're running a not-for-profit organization and want to learn how to most effectively use social media, why not join a LinkedIn Group called "Social Media Today" and post a question: Does anyone have best practice examples of how not-for-profits are using social media?
In fact, someone already posted this question and there are over 300 answers ready for your review. For the record, I was especially impressed with the social strategy of the American Red Cross. You'll find them on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and many other social sites. Model their approach and you'll be on the fast track to success.

B rian Beaulieu is the "economist with a personality" (my title not his) . He is one of the country's leading economists, MY Vistage member, a phenomenal speaker, brilliant businessman and a special friend. CEOs worldwide rely on his forecasting as they plan their business year. And for anyone trying to understand the economy, Brian speaks and writes in English not in that foreign language called economicspeak. Enjoy!
The Fiscal Deal The president and the congress managed to encompass all scenarios with the Fiscal Cliff Deal that was reached on Wednesday January 2. Taxes were raised significantly, slight cuts were agreed upon, and the "can was kicked down the road" for two months on more talks on spending cuts. There will be one dollar in cuts for every forty-one dollars in tax increase. That is a terrible idea but it is one we will have to live with, for now. Today's fiscal deal in Washington can be undone to some degree by a future congress (such as the one being seated now). There are three good things to come out of the discussions. One, the increased taxes will be applicable to households making $450,000 as opposed to the originally proposed $250,000. In addition, the dividends and capital gains tax increases are gentler than would have occurred without the bipartisan agreement. Lastly, the dreaded Alternative Minimum Tax annual problem looks to have been successfully handled, saving a potential 20 million households from a sharply higher tax bill on 2012 income. The AMT should not be an issue in the coming years because of the pending legislation. The most asked question today has been whether the deal changes our outlook for 2013. No, it does not. Consumer problems are coming and those problems will slow the entire economy down in 2013. LIFE LESSONS...FUNNY, FIT
OR FABULOUS
Submitted by John Godoy

That was the name of one of my businesses and oh, come on, I know guys cook, too.
Salted Pistachio Brittle (yum!) - Nonstick vegetable oil spray
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1 cup unsalted, shelled raw natural pistachios, very coarsely chopped
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- Coarse gray sea salt (such as fleur de sel or sel gris)
- Special equipment: A candy thermometer
Line a rimmed baking sheet with pa rchment paper; spray with nonstick spray and set aside. Whisk sugar, corn syrup, and 3 tablespoons water in a medium saucepan. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Fit saucepan with candy thermometer, bring mixture to a boil, and cook until thermometer registers 290F, 3-4 minutes.
Using a heatproof spatula, stir in pistachios, butter, and kosher salt (syrup will seize initially, but will melt as it heats back up). Continue to cook syrup, stirring often, until thermometer registers 300F and pistachios are golden brown, 3-4 minutes. Caramel should be pale brown (it will darken slightly as it cools). Sprinkle baking soda over and stir quickly to blend caramel thoroughly (mixture will bubble vigorously).
Immediately pour caramel onto prepared baking sheet and, using a heatproof spatula, quickly spread out as thin as possible. Sprinkle sea salt over and let caramel cool completely. Break brittle into pieces. DO AHEAD: Brittle can be made 1 week ahead. Store airtight between sheets of parchment paper (to prevent sticking) at room temperature.

Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I'd bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time!

To realize the value of ONE YEAR,
Ask a student who failed a grade.
To realize the value of ONE MONTH,
Ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby.
To realize the value of ONE WEEK,
Ask the editor of a weekly newspaper.
To realize the value of ONE HOUR,
Ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.
To realize the value of ONE SECOND,
Ask a person who just avoided an accident.
To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND,
Ask the person who won a silver medal in the Olympics.
Treasure every moment that you have! And
Treasure it more because you shared it
with someone special, special enough to spend your time.
And remember that time waits for no one.
Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery.
Today is a gift. That's why it's called the present!
